Marcus is in freeZe mode. His brain isn't really thinking about work and he might not be a strong reader. Reading the problem with Marcus and asking probing questions might get him more interested in the process. When he gets the process right and talks about next steps, celebrate his small wins

Marcus does not typically struggle. When he has this moment of struggle, he realizes that he does not have the strategies to complete the work and can only think of his mom telling him to try harder. He can’t try because he isn’t used to struggling which could have caused this overwhelming sense of emotion

He is using his blurting to process his emotions and to think through things.

It is probably to soothe himself and hear himself talking.

Tell him that you like his ideas and that he should write them down so that he doesn't forget them. Everyone else needs a little bit more time than he does.

I think that maybe having a number or popsicle stick method so that every student knows that they will get called on once and randomly and you have to wait for that to happen to speak. I think that writing down his ideas will significantly help. Having a dedicated notepad for Devon would be helpful.

reminds me of my son--as smart as he is he is also incredibly insecure (has OCD) and ties up so much of his positive identity with being the person always answering

Devon is seeking control and attention - his behavior perhaps allows for deflection once the attention he seeks is received. The teacher could thank him for answering the questions but reminded him of the expectations -

Also, discourse could be structured so Devon can still shine by having him write it down on paper or allow TURN and Talks, collaborative conversations with students - have daily affirmations with students - and acknowledge students daily!
