Psychological Evaluation: Motivation

Motivation (backstory): Johnny gets beaten a lot at home. His mom and dad don't care about him. It says in the book, "His father was always beating him up, and his mother ignored him, except when she was hacked off at something, and then you could hear her yelling at him clear down at our house." His mom ignores him and his dad beats him. Johnny killed Bob because he got scared. He didn't know better.

Johnny’s main flaw is that he can’t stop protecting his friends. This is normally a good flaw, but it could get him killed. For example, he killed Bob to protect PonyBoy: “‘I killed him,’ he said slowly. ‘I killed that boy’” (49). However, if Johnny hadn’t have had this flaw, the socs would have killed Pony.

Psychological Evaluation-Personality Test

For the personality test, I got adventurer. Now, while that may not seem like it fits Johnny, There is plenty of textual evidence to support this such as, “Johnny looked around, slapping his pockets nervously. ‘We gotta get outa here. Get somewhere. Run away. The police'll be here soon.’ I was trembling, and it wasn't all from cold. But Johnny, except for the fact that his hands were twitching, looked as cool as Darry ever had. ‘We'll need money. And maybe a gun. And a plan’” (50). Now, obviously Johnny wouldn’t have wanted to get into this situation in the first place, but he still knew what to do, almost as if he had dreamed of doing it. And he probably had, considering his father beats him up.

While he did get turned over when the socs threw him around, he stills stays tough, through all the beatings his dad gives him and being ignored by his mom, “His father was always beating him up, and his mother ignored him” (11). Johnny Cade the rock will always stay strong.

Setting-The setting of this book is somewhat unknown, however we know that it is in a suburb separated by two groups, the socs and the greasers. “...West-side rich kids. It's like the term "greaser," which is used to class all us boys on the East Side” (4). Clearly separated.

Conflict-There is conflict between the socs and the greasers. This is definitely described through the book from the multiple fight scenes within the story. “No rival gang. Only Socs. And you can't win against them no matter how hard you try, because they've got all the breaks and even whipping them isn't going to change that fact” (10). Definitely good evidence.
