A rip is a current in the water that goes out to sea. They can be identified by dark, calm streams of water in the middle of wavy ocean, like a calm river in the sea. Rips can be dangerous, by carrying swimmers out to sea, and tiring them out.

You can escape a rip by staying calm, with your hand in the air. That way, lifeguards should see you. To prevent falling into a rip current, you should always make sure you swim between the red and yellow flags. Watch out for debris floating out to sea. If you do get caught in a rip current, stay calm, and swim to the side of the rip. DON'T panic, and don't fight the current, or you will just exhaust yourself.

The best thing to do is call a lifeguard to help, because trying to save someone yourself will probably end up with you getting trapped in the rip too. Tell the person to stay calm.

Always swim between the red and yellow flags, because the lifeguards have put them there and they know whether or not there will be danger. Watch for debris floating along the rip, as if it was being pulled along by something.
