In Fences, Gabe is strongly religious and goes around spreading Christianity to anybody that can hear it. He doesn't care if he annoys people because spreading Christianity matters to him. Gabe runs around chasing the "hell hounds" away from Troy and his family (Wilson). This displays a part of his culture - protect the people that he loves from the bad people of the world.

In The Good Lie, Carrie introduces Jeremiah, Mamere, Paul to American culture. At first they are confused, but after they are living there for a while, they begin to change how they act around their family and friends. For example, Paul was a hard worker and extremely productive when he first arrived to America, but after a while the people he worked with began to influence his decisions. He started smoking weed and being rude to his own brothers (Wilson). Although Paul was influenced to smoke weed, ultimately, it was his decision to do so. The people around us can influence our culture but we are the ones that decide what culture to be a part of

In "Telephone Conversation" by Wole Soyinka, a man is on the phone with his land lady discussing pricing and location, "Madam," I warned "I hate a wasted journey- I am African" (Soyinka lines 4-5). The man speaking to the landlady skips straight to the point because he knows that people of white culture often make racial stereotypes and assumptions when they see the person. So instead of withholding the information until they meet in the real world, he tells her right away so that she can make her decision then and there. When he says "I hate a wasted journey" he means he hates to waste his time - so he tells her right away.
