Sustainable development is a crucial part to make sure our environment stays clean and beautiful. I still remember during my secondary school, we as students needed to conduct gotong royong at the hostel on sunday every week. We spent like 3 hours cleaning our room and hostel. It's 3 hours and sometimes it's more than that. 3 hours is not a short time and we can do many other activities like playing football at the field( we can only play football in the morning on Sunday only), outing with the family and study especially for form 5 students that will take SPM in that year. Not only was the gotong royong so long, but we needed to keep cleaning our room until we got approval from the warden. At first, especially when I was in form 1, I always grumbled because I felt that this activity is not necessary to do every week, maybe we can do it once a month.

But, when I am growing up and eventually become a form 5 student which is the last year student, I can see that actually this activity is beneficial and compulsory especially when we are living in a community. When we are doing gotong royong and we start cleaning a place like our room, without us realizing, actually we start cleaning ourselves also, especially our heart and our soul. I also realize that I can study better in a clean and tidy place because it feels very comfortable and convenient, it makes me more concentrate and focus on my study. When we are living in a clean and beautiful place, it feels like the place is giving us a positive vibe and it increases our productivity. It also will make us feel more energetic to go through our daily life. Can you imagine how it feels when we are living in a very dirty place like we are surrounded by trash and rubbish? It will feel very uncomfortable and we will feel very miserable, lazy to do anything and it can also bring many diseases to us like malaria, plague, dengue fever and much more. We need to take care of our health because like people always said we just live once. So, when we have good health, we can practice many more sustainable developments in different aspects like social, economic and environment, and lead our country and religion to the right and successful way.

The conclusion from the above event is we need to practice cleanliness and hygiene as our religion encourages us to remain clean. Prophet Muhammad also practices cleanliness of self & surrounding to a great extent and even said "cleanliness is part of our religion & faith”. This is one of the verses from Al-Quran that mention about cleanliness which is "Truly, Allah loves those who turn to Him constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean”(2:222) Surah Al-Baqarah. As Islam covers all aspects of life, cleanliness & hygiene needs to be balanced physically & spiritually in our daily life. The example of spiritual perspective of cleanliness are having clean and pure thinking, avoiding sins, making a lot of dhikrs and making sure the heart is pure of spiritual affliction such as anger, hatred, relying on other than Allah, pride & arrogance and the example from physical perspective are making wudu', taking bath, cleaning teeth, using fragrance, keeping house and clothes clean. In a nutshell, the importance of cleanliness cannot be ignored in individual as well as communal life. On one hand it is an important factor for human health and spiritual development; on the other hand it is essential for environmental development.
