Hello, everybody. I am your instructor, John Hutchings. A little housekeeping. Click the pink button in the lower left hand corner to open a text box for you, and then click the three little dots in the lower right corner of the text box to open the photo, film, voice apps. I am the associate director of career for working professional MBAs. At my first job post-MBA, there was a coworker at American Express that seemed to get promoted every six months. I just admired her drive. She had a daily to do list which was 24 items, and she got everything done every day. She had overflowing energy as well.

Hey everyone! My name is Melissa Warren, and I am a Senior Reporting Analyst at Nuveen (a subsidiary of TIAA, which my department recently re-orged to so I feel like I work for both in a way?). In the past my career has advanced fairly quickly, and with that came a strong reputation. I think I am a determined and assertive employee (except for public speaking), but a lot of my success has come from having amazing managers who were truly advocates. After my daughter was born in 2016, I took a different position which allowed me to work remotely quite a bit, and a very flexible manager. This helps with having a toddler, and a baby due in April, but not so much with my perception to other teams in my department who have a less flexible work environment. Somehow, because I'm not in my cube every day, some employees/peers view that as disengaged and less visible. I continually seek more opportunities to display talent to the department, but have had very little luck in the last year and a half, and I believe this is a combination of working remotely and having a manager that is perhaps not my advocate like others have been. Very interested in if this course can help to address that issue, or if it is time to move on.

This means I am currently not working at any corporate firm. But, I am to graduate in May 2018, after which I am joining Deloitte as a Consultant.

Before joining my MBA, I was working with a consulting firm. It was my first job after my undergraduation. During my tenure, I admired and respected a Senior Consultant who got promoted to a manager. The jump from Senior Consultant to Manager in that firm is one of the toughest ones. It is not easy to achieve it in a span of 3 years. But he did it with such ease. His undying commitment to work, his drive to take any task to completion, and a desire to learn everyday made it possible for him.

Currently, I'm Sr. Manager of Communications for the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants.
I've been watching--and even helping--a colleague as he continues his advancement through my company over the last several years. I know that before he even started working with us, he knew exactly where he wanted to be within a certain number of years and made a point of telling our Sr. VP during his interviews. He's never been shy about stating his intentions and taking whatever necessary steps to meet his goals.

I'd like to start identifying my intentions and communicating them to my manager and VP as well. For many years, I have been focused on the work, but I am ready to bring my team along through their own professional development and advance my career in the process.
Like Melissa mentioned: I do hope this course can help me find a better fit within the company where I work, or help me expand my horizons elsewhere. I'm ready.
When I'm not working or studying, I'm mom to two awesome kids: Erin and Davis. I'm the luckiest gal to have the support of my husband Larry while I tackle the Jenkins MBA. He keeps me sane Here's a picture of me at the top of Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale. I had no business climbing it, but I did it anyway.

One of my friends and colleagues recently got promoted by passing a certification exam (these exist for different areas of nursing) and taking on more responsibility by joining committees and spearheading initiatives for unit improvement. She was able to get promoted by going above and beyond what was required and meeting the objectives to move up to the next level. In this class I'm hoping to learn more about how to shift roles or careers while getting promoted.
Outside of the MBA program, I enjoy running, hiking, traveling, and watching college sports (Go Hoos!). I am very excited for graduation and to see what the future holds for me. I currently serve as a DOD contractor with TATE Inc. specializing in survival instruction. Every day I get to teach our armed forces techniques and tactics on how to survive in the conditions they are likely to encounter. If it sounds fun then believe it, it is very fun. Prior to this job I received a highly coveted award, "The Commanders Award for Public Service." Apparently its one of the highest awards a DOD contractor can receive. I received it for activities conducted overseas in a combat environment so I am rather proud of it. As far as internal advancement, I really want to know how you make the leap from doing to managing without any or little management experience. In my free time I really enjoy anything to do with the outdoors including fishing, hunting and all sports. Below is a picture of a nice catfish I caught here in North Carolina last year.

Hello Fellow MBA students! This is my last semester in the program and I am excited to be taking this course to help accelerate my career. I recently transitioned into a new industry and profession so I feel as though I am in a learning curve and somewhat starting from scratch. I am a Project Accountant for Brasfield & Gorrie, a large general contractor with divisions all over the southeast. Currently, I live in Black Mountain NC and work in Asheville on the Mission Hospital expansion. This is a great area to live and I feel fortunate my family was relocated here for this project. I have three boys in the house, a husband and two kids (5yrs and 3). We play a lot of baseball and enjoy boating on the coast of NC where I grew up.

It seems that the importance of business relationships and managing perceptions are key to successful advancement in the workplace. I have witnessed on several accounts advancements that stem from an employee’s ability to create strong visibility for her/himself to the right people with the right power; not necessarily the strength of skill set. Being able to influence others is also a necessary skill it seems for advancement. Any teachings to address these key skills in branding would be of interest to me in this course.

Looking forward to a great semester!

I currently live in Redding, CA and work as a Recruiting Company Commander for Army Recruiting across Northern California and Southern Oregon. Although I oversee recruiting now, my primary occupation in the Army is a Signal Officer and generally oversee IT services, networking, radios, etc in support of Army units/organizations. In 2013, I was selected over six other signal officers to command a signal company while assigned to an Infantry Brigade at Fort Knox, KY. I believe I was selected over other officers because I was a graduate of Ranger School, had a greater breadth of leadership experience and was seen as more assertive. In this course I am naturally interested in dynamics that exist across several civilian sector jobs that I may not be aware of; in particular the value of knowing people to move up as opposed to other factor such as merit based.

Hello All- I'm Vicki Jeffries, an OEM account manager for Volvo/MACK Trucks with Eaton Corporation in Raleigh NC. I've been with Eaton for 7 years now, and this is my 3rd role with the company. I will finally be done with my MBA coursework this summer, so I will walk in December! :)

Most recently I changed divisions with Eaton, from the Electrical side of the firm to Hydraulics. It was a huge leap, but one of the key factors in being selected among the pool of applicants was my understanding of the sales process, and Eaton's focus on relationships. Eaton is a huge firm, with multiple divisions in nearly every country. This role is challenging in that I work from a home office, and rely on counterparts all over the globe to deliver materials, managing the supply chain, work with fulfillment teams, etc. Knowing how to be successful working with a large group of teammates (none of whom I manage directly or see regularly), and how to achieve results for our customers and my firm at the same time were the key factors in why I was selected for the role.

That being said, I am always interested in things to consider when trying to move up the corporate ladder. I am a sales and marketing person, so reaching out to others and sharing comes pretty easily to me. What I often find difficult is finding ways to add value beyond relationship building with professional contacts that I rarely encounter. I'd love some ideas on how to reconnect with professional contacts that I may have met long ago or worked with previously. Overall, I'd really like to get better at maintaining business relationships. I definitely see the value in them, but could use some tips or prompts to ensure that I don't let relationships get too cold over time.

Thanks and I look forward to working with you

This is my fourth year as a part-time, online MBA candidate and I will graduate after the Summer2018 semester.

While an undergraduate student at NC State, I had an internship at GlaxoSmithKline. Throughout my internship, I made it a point to schedule one-on-one meetings with directors and vice presidents across IT so that I could learn more about the different areas in the R&D IT organization in which I worked. Building those relationships with senior leadership resulted in one of them advocating for me to be offered a position in the IT Development Program, a new-graduate rotational program for future leaders. I know that investing time in establishing those relationships with leadership was a huge part of me getting accepted into the program.

One internal advancement issue that I'd like to ensure we address in the course is to talk about continued advancement past the first/lower levels of management. and onto more senior level positions.

In this class, I would like to make sure we cover how to set yourself apart in an environment where the people you spent a good part of your career working with are not the ones now making the future hiring decisions to that new level.

This time it is warrant based where a board of officers will make their decision based on my peers, work evaluations, and qualifications. Obtaining my MBA is one of the many steps along the way.

Hello Friends! My name is Megan Talley. I live in Charlotte and am a marketing project manager with Novant Health. I've been with the company for 12 years and underwent a role change when our team restructured about five years ago (unfortunately I liked my old role better than the new one that was created!).

I believe I have a reputation for being a creative, hard-working leader, but our organization historically has not offered merit-based raises. As such, I feel like I haven't advanced in my career as quickly as my peers because I've been loyal to a company and a job I (more or less) loved. Recently, however, many folks on our department's leadership team have received merit-based raises without any additional responsibility. It's left many of us wondering what opportunities exist for the rest of us.

All that to say, I have accepted a new job with a new company and will start after I graduate in May! This company is MUCH smaller than my current employer - a handful of oral surgery clinics - so I will be a one-woman show for this newly created role. As such, I'm especially interested in having career advancement conversations in companies where no such precedent has been set. I look forward to learning with you all!

Hello to all, I am Andrea Hauser, I currently work at Novant Health as a Human Resources Business Partner and have been with the organization over 21 years all in HR, but in various roles. I am really enjoying my current role working on various projects such as starting up new Ambulatory Surgical Centers across the state as well as working on strategic workforce plans with one of the service lines I support. Winston Salem is home for me, along with my husband Jon and our two kids Carston (12) and Caroline (9). I started my on-line MBA journey in the fall of 2015 and have loved every minute of it (yes, even those difficult days!). Graduation is coming in May and I’ll finish up one course over the summer to be officially complete. As an internal advancement issue, I'd like to have discussion around what to consider as a promotion, particularly as organizations are looking to go more flat. I’m looking forward to learning how to be more successful in being a candidate of choice for a promotion in the near future, as well as successful in utilizing my new skills learned!

Hello class! My name is Lindsey Jones and I am a Drug Product Development Project Manager at Alcami Corporation in Wilmington, NC. I've spent my entire career in the Pharma Industry and relocated to the Carolinas almost 3 years ago with my family for my current position. I feel like I am back home because I received my Bachelor's degrees from NC State in 2006. I am in my second year of the MBA program. I am very excited about this class because career advancement is a very strategic issue. I was promoted every 2.5 -3 years at my last company into positions of increasing responsibility and technical knowledge. When I became PMP certified, I sought a Project Manager role and was given the promotion over other internal candidates because of my experience in other roles. I received a significant promotion when I accepted my most recent role which required that I change companies. I hope to learn about how to navigate the strategic dynamics of career advancement in a corporate setting.
When I am not managing drug development projects and working on MBA classes, I love to spend time on the water with my two young boys (one of which was born during my first semester in the Jenkins program) and my husband.

There was one colleague who got promoted every 18 months really impressed me a lot.
