USRAH 2 WEEK 1

Our first usrah session began with a taaruf session led by our facilitator, Sr. Hazirah. Through this session, I got to know my groupmates from different courses and became more comfortable with them. The session also helped us build a good bond and created a warm atmosphere.

The topic of our first usrah was Niyyah (intention). We reflected on the hadith “Actions are according to intentions” (Al-Bukhari & Muslim), which emphasizes that all actions should be done sincerely for the sake of Allah. Sr. Hazirah explained the two types of Ibadah: Ibadah Khassah (specific acts like Salah and Zakah) and Ibadah Ammah (general good deeds done with sincere intention). She highlighted that daily actions can become worship if they are done to seek Allah’s pleasure.

Usrah Week 2: Reasons and Sources of Hikmah from Ibadah

The usrah session was led by Sr. Hazirah, who explained that specific acts of worship (Ibadah Khassah) such as Salah and Hajj protect Muslims from Fahsya’ (immoral acts like zina) and Munkar (forbidden deeds). This is mentioned in Surah Al-Isra’ (17:32), which reminds us to stay away from shameful and evil actions. Ibadah helps us reflect on ourselves and purify our niyyah so that all actions are directed towards worshipping Allah.

Benefits of Ibadah
Salah, when performed with khusyuk and on time, refines character, purifies intentions, and prevents immoral behaviour. It also serves as Ijma‘ul Ibadah, connecting believers directly to Allah and relieving distress.
Sawm trains Muslims to attain taqwa, discipline, and patience, with immense rewards promised by Allah.
Zakah purifies wealth and the soul, strengthens obedience to Allah, and helps reduce economic inequality by redistributing wealth to those in need.
Hajj reflects total devotion to Allah, encourages self-control, and prepares believers for the Hereafter.

This usrah session focused on the importance of Salah as a direct connection between servants and Allah to seek His mercy and guidance. We learned the conditions that make Salah obligatory, the requirements for its validity, and the preparation needed through wudu and tayammum. Proper purification, correct pillars, and performing Salah in order help us achieve khushu’ and ensure the prayer is valid and meaningful.

Reflection
Salah distinguishes Muslims from non-Muslims and strengthens our relationship with Allah. It is a source of guidance (hidayah), and neglecting it may lead to sinful behaviour. Therefore, we must remain committed to performing Salah consistently and sincerely.

Khushu’ in Salah refers to total humility, focus, and submission to Allah, where the heart and body are fully present in prayer. It transforms Salah from a routine act into a meaningful spiritual connection. Khushu’ can be attained by understanding the recitations, imagining Salah as the last prayer, and treating it as personal time with Allah.

Salah performed with khushu’ nurtures humility (tawadu’), contentment (qanaah), and obedience to Allah. It also helps restrain sinful actions, improves physical well-being, and is considered a form of jihad as it requires striving against one’s inner desires.

Reflection
Allah elevates the status of those who perform Salah with khushu’. Therefore, we should view Salah not merely as an obligation, but as a sincere means to connect with Allah and continuously improve its quality to strengthen our closeness to Him.

The usrah session began with Surah Al-Baqarah (2:183), which explains that Sawm is prescribed to help believers attain taqwa. Allah mentioned the ummah before us to ease the sense of burden and remind us to become a better generation. Sawm teaches self-restraint and mindfulness of Allah in daily life.Through fasting, Muslims learn sabr in obedience, in avoiding prohibited actions, and in facing trials. Sawm also nurtures rahmah by building empathy towards the less fortunate. The session also highlighted the importance of Zakah, including Zakah al-Mal and Zakah Fitrah, in purifying wealth and helping those in need.

Sawm serves as a training ground to improve character and habits through consistency during Ramadan. The blessed month, especially Laylatul Qadr, encourages believers to increase good deeds and carry positive changes beyond Ramadan.
