Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author of "The Scarlet Letter" grew up during the 19th Century in Salem, Massachusetts. He was born in 1804 and died in 1864, in Plymouth, New Hampshire. He was raised by his parents Nathaniel and Elizabeth Clark Hathorn. Hawthorne's ancestors actually spelled their name without the 'w' in it (Hathorne), but since Nathaniel was trying to distance himself because of his families harsh past, he added the 'w' to make it Hawthorne.
