Gatsby is a very famous and wealthy man who lives in Long Island. Every weekend he would throw extravagant parties where a lot of rich people would show up without invitations. In the beginning of the story, Gatsby is a mysterious man with many people telling different stories about who he is. Apparently, Gatsby used to date Nick's cousin Daisy, but then WWI started and Gatsby was sent off to serve in the army. But for some reason he wasn't able to come back for Daisy and she ended up marrying Tom. Gatsby now wishes to meet with Daisy again by throwing parties every weekend hoping Daisy would one day wander in.

"I thought you knew, old sport. I'm afraid I'm not a very good host." (Page 53)
The significance of this quote is that it shows not many people knew who Gatsby was since Nick went around asking people and they didn't know who he was as well. Gatsby didn't know anyone else either and so this shows that Gatsby was only throwing the parties so that Daisy would come over.
"I am the son of some wealthy people in the middle-west—all dead now. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It is a family tradition." (Page 70)
The significance of this quote is that it is mostly false. Gatsby actually grew up in a very poor family and was never educated at Oxford.

One important action that Gatsby did was that he sent Nick an invitation to one of his parties at his mansion. Everyone who attended Gatsby's parties were all uninvited and just decided to show up. Since Nick was the only one to ever receive an invitation, it shows that Gatsby needed Nick for something really important which was inviting Daisy over for tea one day. Another important action that Gatsby did was that he invited Nick for lunch in the city. This action was important because this is all part of Gatsby's plan to meet up with Daisy again. Gatsby wants to become close with Nick so that one day he would hopefully invite Daisy over to the mansion for tea.
