1. (2nd) My parents want me to become a manager and a person with power. They dont put an awful amount of pressure and I’m glad that they dont. People who put too much pressure can overwork their children and make them miserable. This can deter them from being who they want to be and make them view this modern way of life as a depressing cycle and make their lives unfulfilling. If their children break because of their pressure they could make unproductive citizens.
2.(5th) Several qualities I look for someone I admire are caring, rational, and brave. Caring is an important trait as there are a lot of people in the world that need help and attention. People who are caring help these people, caring also makes people human. Being rational is an essential trait as its nessessary to know what can be harmful and what can be beneficial, and know the ups and downs of actions. Being brave is an admirable charecteristic as it shows independence and will to accomplish tasks.

1.The church is where Sonny spent most of his Sunday’s during his youth at.

2.The convenience store is where Sonny buys the fuel for his rockets. The money he uses to buy the goods for his rockets is from his newspaper routes around Coalwood.
3.Sonny’s house has a view of the creek and is where Sonny and his friends test their first rocket which resulted in a destroyed fence and several flowers burnt to a crisp. His father is angry at this, and so is his mother. But, his mother encourages Sonny to continue his rocketry as long as it isn’t near their house.

4.The creek starts at a drainage pipe which created a hole in the fence that Sonny used to climb through to get to the Coal Mine’s machine shop. There, he learned to solder and to weld the pieces of his rocket together.

5. The rock spoil area (unusable coal and rock) is where the boys launch several of their metal rockets. One of these rockets hits his father’s office, displacing several bricks. After this, his father throws away his chemicals used for the rockets.

Sonny’s thoughts and feelings about his community and family are mixed. In his family, he feels that it’s divided and finds it hard to get attention and care from his father. His father ignores his requests and accomplishments. This can be seen when Hickman writes, “His eyes were on Jim the whole time. Before I got there, he turned… and didn’t see my as I paraded past.” (Hickman 54). Sonny sees that his father appreciates and is proud of his brother more than him. He wants to accomplish the goal of launching a rocket with his friends to make his father proud. The father’s stubbornness in the belief that the coal mining business will last to support Sonny also frustrates him. Sonny and his mother don’t believe this and is another dividing factor in their relationship.

Sonny has faith in his small community but has doubts, “There was no way any Big Creek student was going to beat Welch students head to head in a science fair.” (Hickman 81). Sonny isn’t certain that his informal group of rocket fanatics can beat the well funded Welch students. He dismisses Quintin’s idea of going to the fair and ignores his explanation for why it wouldn’t be a bad idea. Sonny gradually begins to start to agree with Quintin and becomes more hopeful. He soon believes he has a chance to impress his father and make his high school community win the science fair.
