Through the technique of future dialogues, the students of the Majorana Scientific High School began by reflecting on their concerns and developed proposals and ideas for a more united and supportive Europe. They focused on the theme of solidarity from the specific perspective of island inhabitants. By intersecting their reflections with the contributions of international participants, the aim is to create a Manifesto on Solidarity, in a place where the most pressing contradictions of our time are experienced — at the “door of Europe.”

WE is a vehicle to amplify underrepresented voices and to strengthen communities and connections, aiming to redefine citizen engagement and access to democracy in the EU.

The journey began in Brussels, with a focus on youth empowerment and democracy. It now arrives in Lampedusa, aspiring to write a new chapter on solidarity.

Today, the European continent is once again facing immense challenges: climate change, migration crises, pandemics, growing inequalities, and energy insecurity. These upheavals reveal a shared urgency: to reinvent our ways of living together, while respecting human beings and ecosystems.

In this manifesto, I would like us to discuss concretely how to develop solidarity, rely on collective action for an easy ecological transition, mobilize and empower islands to adapt to the effects of climate change, and finally, reflect on migration issues, especially for a future in which solidarity is not decreed but built step by step, like a path we forge together.

Create community participation

What do we need to express / practice solidarity?

Day by day solidarity need time and attitude, practice empathy, having time for non productive activities and being together playing music.

Different stories ≠ fear, enemy, security ---> create the condition for solidarity through other naratives

We need the situation to experience different roles, be someone else by playing

Feeling common desires and needs as human beings.

No citizen but individuals/persons: we can clarify this at the beginning of the Manifesto -> citizenship as a concept, in a wider sense

Keeping in mind that the possibility to inact solidarity is a priviledge. Time.
