Hollywood Food Coalition Volunteering

My CAS project is under the "Service" strand. I will be volunteering at a community dinner meal service program with the Hollywood Food Coalition. I will be packing hot food as well as cold food to to-go bags and greeting/getting to know the guests. This is important as help is always needed everywhere, especially for those who are underprivileged. I wanted to utilize my social skills to help the guests have a good time while simultaneously taking part in a program that has an impactful cause for the people of Los Angeles. I hope to make the guests have a memorable time during the meal service, and to really be a part of the community exchange of this program at the Hollywood Food Coalition.

Beach Cleaning

This project falls under the "Service" strand of CAS. I will be cleaning up pollution on the beach such as garbage, cigarettes, plastic, and other forms of pollution. Removing waste from beaches is crucial because it can and will impact humans in the future. For instance, plastic on beaches may enter the ocean and fish may swallow microplastic. Subsequently, fishermen capture fish and sell them on the market. Then, humans buy and essentially consume microplastic, which is detrimental to our health.

Additionally, people witnessing or passing by beach cleaning will be inspired to make positive contributions to society as they see others making positive impacts on society. Ultimately, this form of service is important because it will contribute to a healthier society.

Our action plan is simple because it only has three steps: Gather materials, go to a beach, pick up trash, and finally dispose of it properly.

For our materials, we require volunteers, beach cleaning tongs, masks, garbage bags, and sunscreen.

I plan to do this with many other people. This can benefit me personally because I can relate to others by doing this and make friends with new people.

"Vol. 3 The Subliminal Verses" Album

This project falls under the Creativity strand of CAS.

Music has always played such a huge role in my life, and Slipknot is one of my favorite bands of all time, with their third album, The Subliminal Verses, being one of my favorite albums of all time. I also have been playing guitar for a very long time, I started when I was in 2nd grade. For my CAS, I want to learn the guitar for every song of the album, play it in one go, and record it. I hope to improve as a musician, and it will be a fun process as I've never really played something like Slipknot on guitar before.

For my action plan, I need to get the correct strings for my guitar, I need to remove guitar from the audio so I can put my guitar into it, and obviously I need to learn the songs. I will use Moises to help me with all the recording and audio work, and Songster/YouTube to help me learn the songs.

I'm not sure what benefits the community will receive from me doing this, but I know that for me, I will expand my guitar skills, and increase my knowledge about recording audio and mastering audio.

- Henry Iwaschuk '26

CAS Strand: Activity

This CAS project involves actively participating in cultural equestrian activities in Indonesia, such as traditional horse riding practices, horse racing events, and learning about local equestrian traditions. Indonesia has a rich equestrian heritage, particularly in regions like Sumba, where horses play a significant role in cultural and daily life. Engaging in these activities will provide a unique opportunity for me to experience the intersection of sport, culture, and tradition.

My objectives are to develop my horse riding skills further as well as gain a deeper understanding of the Indonesian equestrian traditions and enhance self-confidence, discipline, and physical fitness.

My plan of action is to travel to selected locations and engage in planned equestrian activities, such as traditional horse races or festivals, and document my experience. In order to give back to the community, I will be volunteering at stables or raising funds for the animals who are in need and require medical attention.

I will need contacts to stables or equestrian centres who can provide instruction and cultural insight.

Through this activity, I seek for personal development by increasing my riding skills and increase cultural awareness. I also hope to strengthen connections with local communities and support the preservation of their cultural heritage.

Volunteer at my local Red Cross

CAS Strand - Service

Helping those in need has always been a big part of my life, and as I am interested in the medical field, the Red Cross is a simple and effective way to do this. I can help my local community with my time and skills while feeling rewarded for the help I am giving. To do this I have to reach out to my local Red Cross and sign up for a preparatory course to be taught basic first-aid techinques and be assigned a task, that hopefully takes advantage of the 3 languages I speak fluently. The main resource I need is time as the course is fairly long and then to participate I would have to go there often. The expected impact is on my community hopefully participating with others to help those in need of medical assistance. Another important impact is also personal growth, as I said this is something I enjoy doing but it would also teach me important skills and lessons regarding the medical field I might need or find useful in the future.

Suggest public policy for preserving traditional rural culture

Strand: Activity

I noticed so many vibrant cultures and traditions are being faded especially in rural towns and villages due to urbanization and rapid economic development. I would like to research such tradition and interview people who are passing down fragments of it to share how meaningful it is to our national history as a whole. I want to raise awareness and pass actionable policies protecting minority traditions and culture. It would be crucial to consult with experts on folklore studies to learn more about the traditions, public policy researchers who can help draft the policies, and politicians who have the power to pass those. This would benefit the nation by preserving its diverse traditions and history and myself to have a chance to learn more about people beyond me.

Joshua Kim
