1. What are the major influences on first impressions and explain why first impressions often become lasting ones.

The major influences on first impressions are personal disclosure, social schemas, stereotyping, and self-fulfilling prophecies (Nevid, 2012, p 488). A reason first impressions become lasting ones is that new information in our brain is filtered through social schemas we had already formed about them (Nevid, 2012, p 488). An example of this would be if I was to form a positive social schema about a guy I had just met, and if he did something that offended me I would come up with reasons to justify why it was alright for him to do that.

2. Identify factors that influence attraction and *why* you think these factors create the influence they do.

Factors that influence attraction are similarity, physical attractiveness, proximity, and reciprocity (Nevid, 2012, p 496). The brain often finds the Golden Ratio of a face attractive and because of this, humans are attracted to average proportions of a person. (National Geographic, 2015). Another reason for attraction is facial symmetry because it often reflects that someone has good genes. (National Geographic. 2015). When brain waves overlap, it can bring long term attraction between two people.(National Geographic, 2015). I feel that this is because when two people have something in common, such as sharing an experience, it helps bring them closer together by giving them something to talk about and relate to.
