Today we visited the town of Tršice, where the community kept the Wolf family hidden during the war. We learned more details about how Otto Wolf died from a historian in the town, who said that the Nazis had a list of people to capture on suspicion of working with the resistance, but the list got lost, so instead the Nazis took 19 random men and boys from the town who were trying to put out a fire, one of whom was Otto. They were all tortured and then shut inside a barn and burned. This completely unnecessary cruelty arose from one person's careless mistake of misplacing a piece of paper, creating an example, similar to Lidice, of how wartime has the tendency to erode all human value for life, creating the mentality that a few more lost lives are insignificant. The attitude of the Tršice community, however, shows that the opposite is true, that saving one life is better than saving none at all, no matter the extent of destruction in the surroundings. The people of Tršice showed that it is possible to maintain the latter attitude in an atmosphere of chaos and death, as they collectively kept the hidden Wolf family a secret, all risking the lives of themselves and their families to do everything in their power to keep four people from sharing the fate of six million others who died in the Holocaust.

We visited Trische's town hall today, and got the chance to hear the Ohera sisters' story. Their parents helped the Wolf's during the Holocaust when the two of them were only 8 and 5 years old. There was a fire in there town and on that day German officers took the 19 men that helped with the fire. One of those men was their father, and another was Otto Wolf. These men were tortured and interrogated and were then burnt alive. The sisters told us that when the Holocaust ended, they took all the ashes of those men and put them in one coffin. We got to visit the cemetery their grave is in with the sisters after we heard that story, and it was really touching.

Today we got to hear the story of the Ohera sisters'. Reading a story out of a book can have a profound impact on you but nothing compares to hearing a true story from someone who was a part of it. Ms.Ohera's telling of the story about the death of her father and the other townsmen including Otto Wolf was extremely emotional. Hearing the story from her truly touched me.

Today on our way to Poland we stopped in the town of Tršice, known for hiding Otto Wolf and his family during World War II. What interested me was that half the memorial sites on this map weren't in existence until recently. When the Holocaust Study Tour visited years prior, there was no marker to indicate the hiding place of Otto Wolf or honoring the townspeople for their efforts in aiding the Wolf family. The group was able to work together with the town to raise funds for these memorial sites. Now there are maps that show the multiple memorial sites in the town

Today we went to the town of the Tršice and went to the town hall and visited many memorials including the cementary where Otto Wolf and other Jewish men were buried. We got to go to the secret hide out where Otto Wolf and many others were hid from the Nazi's during the war, as well as the memorial that New Milford High School and other doners donated. The hide out was well hiden in the way where walking towards it from above you wouldn't notice people were living near by.
Living in fear and horror everyday in the most worst condition is very difficult to imagine what they have been through. (Just above the top-right of the memorial stone you can see a dent in the ground, that's one of the two holes they lived in)
- Colin Angelitud

Hiding Spot- Otto Wolf

Behind this memorial is the remains of two holes that used to be the hiding spot of Otto Wolf and his family. Covered by shrubs, the hiding spot was almost invisible. Seeing these in the forest today made the entire diary of Otto Wolf come to life. Furthermore, a group of Scouts accompanied us on our journey in the forest and one of the acitivites they have to do as a Scout involves Otto Wolf's story. On the first day, they have to be silent, on the second they have to sleep overnight in the hiding spot, and on the last day they do not eat anything. Otto Wolf and his family had to do this for three years. It is unimaginable to think of this true story and heartbreaking to know that real people had to go through this experience.

The headstone was a memorial for all those that lost their lives in Trišce due to the Nazis. Among them were Otto Wolf and Berthold Ohera, whose daughter we were able to meet and speak to. The images on the headstone indicate this is not a traditional Jewish one, which Otto would have received, this is merely to show the saddened attitudes for those who were lost from the city and the respect that Trišice had for the Wolf family that was in hiding in the woods there.

Today we went to the town Trisce who hid the family of Otto Wolf. We meet the Ohera sisters who's parents hid Otto's family. This was dangerous because if they every got caught, the whole town would be in danger. Towards the end of the war Otto's family was less careful as they thought the nazis would soon lose the war. One day a fire happened near the Ohera's house. People from the town came to help. On the other hand the nazis came into the town. They had a list of people who were not patriotic but lost it. They instead took random people of the town and killed them. The picture below are the victims. As you can see both the Ohera's father and Otto Wolf was lost. It is a terrible event to hear about and the community of Tresice wants people to know the story.

In the town of Trsice, there are several memorials that stand there today. Most of which commemorate those people who were killed or those who helped in the effort to save others. The memorial within the picture is dedicated to the people who hid the Wolf family from being imprisoned by Nazi Germans. Not only highlights does this memorial honor the men and women who helped save the Wolf family, but also highlights the good and just in others; even through this time of great turmoil, putting their lives at risk each day the family was kept hidden. This memorial stand in the center of the town to remind the citizens of the value of Trsice and the history that lies behind it.

Seeing the two holes they had to live in really spoke to me because it showed me how hard the conditions were there. It was also really interesting and moving to see the different memorials that commemorated this event and how ingrained it is in the community that they are located in. It was also interesting to know that the memorial pictured below is tied to this trip as those that came before us helped this memorial become a reality.

During our special visit to Trišce, we were guided to Otto Wolf and his family's hideout in the woods near the main town. This amazing memorial symbolizes the strength and difficulty felt by the Wolf family during their strenuous time in hiding. Previously, there had in fact been no marking or memorial to distinguish these caved in holes of the former hideout, from any other landmark in the dense forest. With the help of our amazing schools and teachers, this memorial was able to be constructed, now commemorating the location of the Wolf family's hideout deep in the woods, a feat impossible or too risky for many others in their time.
