Substance that is Used With the Potential for Abuse:

                        Marijuana
This substance can also be known as weed, pot, herb, Mary Jane, and various other terms. Marijuana is a green/gray mixture of the dried flowers of the Cannabis Sativa (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2019). Weed gives the individual a "high" which usually makes them feel a pleasant sense of relaxation. However, every body reacts differently so while one person may feel relaxed, another person might feel anxiety, panic, and fear. There are many ways this substance can be consumed, but some of the most common methods are smoking it from "joints" which are hand rolled cigarettes, using a vaping pen, using "bongs" which are water pipes, and in edibles.

Why someone uses this substance (using the Biopsychosocial Model).

In addition to biological disorders, people also use Marijuana to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression for their psychological state which is usually a result of sociological factors. It seems like anxiety and depression is definitely heard of much more now than in previous generations. Many people from older generations do not even believe in anxiety or depression. Much of what is causing this anxiety and depression within young people is the rise and addiction to social media (McCarthy, 2019). Sociological factors consists of interpersonal relationships and social support dynamics and what young people are doing is basing their self-esteem and worldview on something that is made to seem perfect which can ultimately negatively effect their psychological health (McCarthy, 2019).

How Media Influences Substance Use (i.e., music/concerts, social media, celebrities).

As previously mentioned, the use of the media is at an all time high and just like everything else, substance use (marijuana, cocaine, alcohol, opioid, etc) is posted and promoted as something that is not what it seems. There are music celebrities freely showing substance use in their music videos, in their social media pictures, in their music lyrics, etc. and particularly glorifying and encouraging the use of these drugs. What most artists/celebrities fail to mention is the damage, the abuse, and the addiction that comes with using these substances. People look up to these artists/celebrities and since they are engaging in substance use, people feel "cool" to follow in their footsteps and think that since he/she is doing it then it must not be that bad.

The Biopsychosocial Model takes under consideration an individual's biological factors as well as their connections to psychological and social factors (Safarino & Smith, 2017). Many people in the United States use Marijuana medically to help aid with their biological disorders. An example of this can be problems with a person's tissue and joints.
