It all starts with select hand-me-downs from my dear older siblings. I never had any fashion sense most of my time growing up. No one really commented on my look nor did I become aware of how I select my articles of clothing. I attended a charter school that had a strict uniform code, so I spent most of each day wearing the same uniform like a cartoon character. I became conscious about the way I look when I had one too many shirts that were a little too small for me, or clothing that had a childish look to them, like my once beloved superman shirt with muscle definition, or my adventure time Finn sweater with ear nubs on the hood and everything. Sorting out the good clothes from the bad and unfit, I came to realize I still had some articles of clothing I consider childish. The way I choose clothing was not because of what age demographic it lies in, but based on the graphic art. I choose my clothing based on what I was exposed to growing up. The shows I watch, the bands I listen to, the people I watch on YouTube and other social media… These factors are what influence what I like to wear. My fashion is a collection of memories I’m fond of, and made up of mostly graphic tees because that’s the most affordable. Every now and then I come across something special from one of the clothing websites I like visiting. I’ve always loved clashing color as a theme and that’s probably because I’m a fan of all kinds of cartoons. A color block trend has been gaining popularity for a while now, and I was exposed to it through a married couple on YouTube that own a clothing company called TeddyFresh. Since then I’ve been sculpting an actual style for myself. Trying to nab pieces of clashing color block form that website and other affordable clothing stores, I finally found what my conscious has been trying to tell me whenever I look at my reflection in the mirror, “you need more color in your life.”
