As Maria’s therapist, I would apply Interactive Reasoning to her case by prioritizing a strong, empathetic connection and focusing on her personal experiences. My response would acknowledge her feelings by saying, "Maria, I hear how incredibly frustrated and tearful you feel; losing your independence, especially with something you love like cooking, is absolutely understandable." I would then add a touch of gentle humor: "I may not be able to promise Michelin stars right away, but we will get your kitchen back in business!" I would then motivate her and individualize the plan by saying, "We will work as a team, using your passion as our focus, to help you feel like yourself again." This approach quickly builds trust and rapport and eases the tension.

As Maria’s therapist, I would take time to understand her life story and what her daily activities mean to her. Before her stroke, she was very independent and loved cooking for her family, which are things that were important to who she is. I would talk with her about her feelings of loss and frustration and include these in her therapy plan. By connecting our activities to what she values, like cooking and caring for her family, she can find purpose and motivation again. For example, practicing simple cooking tasks can help her feel more in control and rebuild confidence. I believe that this approach supports her emotions, identity, and recovery as a whole person.

Pragmatic Reasoning

In order to make sure Maria's rehabilitation plan is achievable and feasible given her current living situation and available resources, I would mainly apply pragmatic reasoning in her case. This means looking at the pragmatic factors influencing her recovery in addition to her clinical problems. The interventions must put safety and independence first because Maria lives alone and her daughter only helps with twice-weekly visits. I recommend teaching her energy-saving skills and suggesting suitable assistive technology (such as a reacher or modified kitchen tools) to improve her everyday activities and make independent self-care more manageable. Moreover, I would think about how affordable and accessible any home improvements would be. To speed up communication and support, cooperation with her family and the larger healthcare team is essential. This reasoning guarantees that the objectives of her therapy are realistic, secure enough for her to practice alone, and fully fit into her life outside of the clinic.

As Maria’s Occupational Therapist, I would start by identifying Maria’s specific problem and assess the area of her physical and cognitive impairments by evaluating her muscle strength, range of motion, balance, coordination, and ability to perform daily activities. By basing on the findings, i would develop an evidence-based intervention plan such as adaptive equipment for dressing and cooking, motor retaining, one-handed ADL techniques, and modifying the environment by implementing grab bars and organized kitchen layouts. I would also implement communication strategies such as visual cues and gestures to address her mild aphasia.

Conditional Reasoning

As the therapist, I would first recognize Maria’s limitations, including living alone, having limited support, and the meaning of her loss. Considering her current emotional state and the goal of regaining immediate independence, the initial focus would be on adapting physical techniques and using adaptive equipment for basic self-care activities like dressing and meal prep. Which would help her gain confidence in these activities. As Maria progresses, I envision her fully regaining independence. With that I would gradually shift the intervention to remediation. I would select exercises and activities that prioritize the restoration of full function in her left arm. Throughout the therapeutic process, I would be verbally supportive and show a consistent and genuine interest by using motivational words for her to instill hope and confidence. I would also involve Maria in planning and selecting activities that are best suited for her to help her stay engaged and gain more confidence.
