<title>Phonemic Awareness Tool Kit by </title>
      <link>https://padlet.com/cornelljf02/ds20njt26pcwylg2</link>
<description>Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate the smallest sounds, or phonemes, in spoken words. Unlike phonics, it does not involve print but relies on oral and auditory skills. It is one of the most important predictors of later reading achievement because it provides the foundation for decoding, spelling, and fluency. When students lack phonemic awareness, they often struggle to read and comprehend, which can lead to long-term academic challenges. Instruction in phonemic awareness should be explicit, systematic, and engaging. The most effective lessons are short and frequent, lasting about five to ten minutes daily. Teachers should begin with simpler skills, such as rhyming, and gradually progress to more complex skills, like phoneme segmentation and blending (95 Percent Group, n.d.). Activities that include songs, clapping, picture cards, and movement ensure that learning is accessible and enjoyable. Differentiation is key: visual learners may benefit from picture supports, while kinesthetic learners thrive with jumping, tapping, or clapping activities. This toolkit includes five skills taught in order of complexity: rhyme recognition, sentence segmentation, syllable awareness, phoneme segmentation, and phoneme blending. Rhyme recognition allows students to identify similar ending sounds, while sentence segmentation helps them break sentences into individual words. Syllable awareness builds understanding of word parts. Phoneme segmentation teaches students to separate a word into sounds, and phoneme blending helps them combine sounds to form words. These last two skills are especially critical for transitioning into phonics. By teaching these skills with engaging activities and clear mastery checks, teachers can build strong foundations that support all learners in becoming confident readers.</description>
