the visual characteristics of an artwork. The things that make an artwork unique to an artists or a time period. e.g. Classical renaisance art has a very different aesthetic to Mannerism. e.g order, balance and harmony vs disorder, chaos and anxiety.

When I'm talking about style I will spend time talking about the stylistics elements that exist within an artwork (line, colour, texture, form .....) I would then talk about effect. What I mean by this is by using these elements is what kind of mood, experience etcetera has the artist created. Why was this important to the artist and then the bigger picture things that influenced this!

I've attached an image comparing paintings of the last supper. (high renaissance interpretation vs mannerist) The way an artwork is handled stylistically can drastically affect the meaning and mood of the painting.

Style can be a way of working which becomes unique to a particular artist or artists. Style can range from from the way the artist portrays humans, the colour, technique or media that they use. It becomes recognisable. Not only do artists have there own style but style also can group the artists into the era in which they are painted. for example the style of paintings which came about through the reinsurance is very different and distinctive to the artworks found in modernism.

Style for me is all about the recognisable visual features of an art work that make an art work uniquely recognisable to an artist place or time. In terms of talking about an art work, art history terminology is important (you don't need to memorise an entire art history dictionary, but a few pertinent words are really helpful).

In terms of differences between styles in the Late Ren there is Colorito (colour, brushwork/brushstrokes) vs designo (composition, form, line) - and then Mannerism which is different again (ambiguous space, dramatic chiaroscuro lighting. unnatural colour)

In Modernism there is a shift towards abstraction, e.g. Fauves - flattening of space and colour, Expressionists - angular lines, primitivist mask like faces, expressive colours, cubists - breaking down, explosion/fragmentation and reasembling of picture planes, Surrealist who are either hyperrealistic and precise in use of colour, brushwork etc or Completely abstract like Miro influenced by automatism - then there is duchamp who completely rejects aesthetics with his 'anti-retinal' style

With Style it is important to ask - to what effect has the artist used this and why do I think this was (given place and time of the artist)?

Style is generally the application of paint, how they use line in terms of whether it is modern, abstract or classical. How they are portraying different ideas within the medium. The application of color and recognition of light, 3d modelling and how this influences the composition. These are usually inspired by what is relevant or new at the time such as what holds value or technological advancements e.g. industrialization and revolutions.

Style I think largely reflects the era the painting was made and specific characteristic like colour and brush strokes that places the painting in its respected category or in a recognised artist group.

In my topic area I think styles vary based on time period/location and the feelings on life at the time. A lot of modernist work was directly made as result of the negativituies of ww1 and/or in Germany, while other works stem from ideas/theories, like Sigmund Freuds ideas about the unconscious mind.
