- "But, it means a lot to me, being able to do my work well, especially that bit about my donors staying "calm." - Kathy is a carer and not a donor, yet she does her job well and helps people that are dying stay calm.
- "...He wanted to hear about Hailsham" - This shows that people are definitely privileged and under privileges. The guy that is dying is trying to live through her showing that society is nit fair.
- Kathy has a conflict with some parts of society because she gets to chose the donors when other people do not get to.
- Kathy - from her perspective is a good person. She helps people with the problems they are having being carers, so she is a good person.
- Ruth - is Kathy's close friend
-Tommy - gets hyped up by the other kids. His head is large and the kids use that to make fun of him

Even though this society is different, there are still regular high schooler drama.

“We had kind of a big exhibition-cum-sale”

This is obviously a big deal because the kids spent three months on the items. Tommy is also getting severely bullied because he did not supply an item to it. This creation was the only personal items that the kids were able to keep. This showed that society was very controlling.

Conflict - The people at Hailsham have to be creative, but not everyone there likes art or is creative like Tommy is. Even still, art is really the only form of expression there. This makes him struggle and get made fun of.

Ruth - She says that Tommy’s problems are because of the way that he acts. She does not give him any sympathy like Kathy gives him.

Not mind what other people were saying"
- This shows us that there are still people that care for the kids even if they are just there for their organs.
- "She's scared of us"
- Ruth says this to show us that the kids in the boarding school do not fully understand everything that is going on around them. They are kept in the dark.
- Conflict - There is a continuing issue with the creativity of Tommy. He is not creative like the people. Miss Emily is says that is okay and they can bloom later with their creative.
- Madam - She is introduced but no one knows very much about her. She just comes and goes. No one really knows her purpose in the book or in the character's lives.

- "About what she did with our work, whether there really was a gallery"
- No one really knows what is going on with the art work or with her. Does it mean something? Do the people that preform the best get chosen for something?
- "All I can tell you today is that its for a good reason. A very important reason. But if I tried to explain it to you now, I don't know think you'd understand. One day, I hope, it'll be explained to you."
- The art work now obviously has a deeper meaning and so does Madam. As the readers though, we do not know what that means.
- Miss Emily - she walks around and keeps her hair in her face that most people would brush away. Her purpose is not really known.
- Conflict- Polly asked a question. She was not allowed to ask, but she did anyway.
- Theme- Society keeps people quite and only certain people know what is going on.

- "But at other times, I think that's wrong—that it was just to do with me and Ruth, and the sort of loyalty she inspired in me in those days."
- Even though Ruth was always kind of mean to her, she still stood by her. Kathy was even with her when Ruth was chosen to be a donor.
- "The woods were at the top of the hill that rose behind Hailsham House. All we could see really was a dark fringe of trees, but I certainly wasn't the only one of my age to feel their presence day and night."
-The school Hailsham is a relatable landscape. It is not so extreme which makes more of an impact on the reader. The woods are the dark part of the story. There is a lot of places to hide, so there are more secrets.
- There is a continued conflict with Ruth and Kathy. Ruth always has a problem with the people that are close to her. Even still Kathy is loyal to her.
- Ruth - she turns to be out be snobby friend.

But it was obvious from her manner towards me, not just over the next few days, but over the weeks that followed, how pleased she was with me."
- Ruth and Kathy can not get along even though they have a deeper connection with one another.
- Conflict - Kathy figures out that Ruth has passed. She is internally conflicted because she lost her life long friend but she lost the person that always.
- Themes - What is the meaning of Kathy's life?

They never grow out if it.
- The kids are starting to understand what they were meant for, giving up their organs. They begin to joke about it and kind of embrace it.
- Conflicts - The people are becoming older and understanding their future. This can lead to some sort of issues of different people.
- Conflicts - The characters are conflicted in the story about sex. If does not mean that much to them, but it does to other people. This can create internal conflicts and conflicts in between people.
- Do these people have a real life? Do they really mean anything

The art in the Gallery is very important.
- Conflicts - Tommy has internal problems because he has to be creative now, but he not.
- Tommy - He does not want to get back with Ruth. This just shows you that they are now worse then they were at Hailsham.
- "Of course, in practice, especially during the first months, we rarely stepped beyond the confines of the Cottages. We didn't even walk about the surrounding countryside or wander into the nearby village. I don't think we were afraid exactly." - The kids are uncomfortable in their new surroundings there is nothing for them there. They do not have any confidence in what they are doing or what is going to happen with them.
- Kathy - She is now a book worm which is what everyone desires to be at the Cottages.

We were quarrelling over all kinds of little things, but at the same time we were confiding in each other more than ever" - Kathy anf Ruth have a very complicated friendships. In one the fights, one is going to share something very important about the other.
- "I suppose, in general, I never appreciated in those days the sheer effort Ruth was making to move on, to grow up and leave Hailsham behind." - This is an example of how Kathy and Ruth are different. this also shows that Kathy has a problem with letting go.
- Conflicts - There are unspoken conflicts. No one speaks about being a carer or anything. It is awkward.

"You can all come and see me." - Ruth seems to believe this play that she can work in an office one day and not become a donor.
- Conflicts - The idea of deferrals comes up while in Norfolk. People only from Hailsham can get differed if they fall in love with another person, but it has to be true love. Not everyone gets this option though.
- Ruth - we learn that she is ruthless, she tells Tommy that he wasn't a real Hailsham student.
- What makes the people at Hailsham better than the other clones? If your art shows that you are truly in love then you can get out of being a donor. She is still afraid of them like she was when they were in Hailsham. She does not seem to have changed at all.
- Conflicts - Miss Emily is seen with Madame, but no one really knows what she is doing there. The situation seems to be very tense.
- Ruth - She seems to be consent with dying and helping the people around her. She seems to have gotten her affairs in order.

- "Whatever else, we at least saw to it that all of you in our care, you grew up in wonderful surroundings. And we saw to it too, after you left us, you were kept away from the worst of those horrors. We were able to do that much for you at least." - Hailsham was just to give the clones a little bit of life and not be treated just like lab rats which is what they started out as.
- "You wouldn't be who you are today if we'd not protected you" - The kids would not have lived a good life if it was not for Mrs. Emily because she kept them ignorant.
- Conflict - Tommy has a tantrum again because they find out the deferrals were not real and they were going to die soon.
- Miss Emily - She is trying to do what is right for the kids even though she was actually afraid of them.
- Madame - She wants to prove that they do have souls and that is why she had made the gallery.

- "to drive off to wherever it was I was supposed to be" - This is Kathy at the end of the book. She is making her way to her next job. She had lost everything. She just seems to be ready to go.
- "I found I was standing before acres of ploughed earth. There was a fence keeping me from stepping into the field, with two lines of barbed wire, and I could see how this fence and the cluster of three or four trees above me were the only things breaking the wind for miles. All along the fence, especially along the lower line of wire, all sorts of rubbish had caught and tangled." - She seems to be looking out into her past, remembering everything that she had lost in her life.
- Tommy - He has completed
- Did their lives really mean anything? Were they really worth the teachers at Hailsham's time?
