Location is "one person's position on the earth's surface," according to Making Connections in Elementary and Middle School Social Studies. Students will use maps and globes to determine and describe the location of something in relation to something else such as schools, stores, towns, road, mountains, etc. This will be done using coordinates of latitude and longitude.

This is the physical environment that surrounds us, as well as different cultural aspects.

Region is "an area of any shape or size that has a common characteristic or set of characteristics." There are man regions in the United States. We have the midwest, southeast, northeast, southwest, and west regions. All of these regions make up different characteristics of those areas such as the weather and the type of land. Physical features is a part of the characteristics, but one must also look at the common characteristics such as the culture, language, religion, politics, and government of the region. There are several regions all over the world and there are no two that are exactly alike.

"Movement refers to the interaction, travel, and communication between people in various regions," according to Making Connections in Elementary and Middle School Social Studies. Teachers can teach this theme by showing students different products and goods that move from one city or country to another; the export and import of goods. We have to work with other countries in order to help one another live, which helps build each others economy. We can also teach students about this theme by showing students how technology and transportation has changed over the course of time. The internet, iPads, iPhones, etc are a huge part of society today, thus looking at the movement of the change is key. Students can look at how children got to school 100 or 200 years ago and compare and contrast how they get to school now. Students can also look at how people move from place to place and why that movement occurs.

Human Interaction with their Environment

Humans interaction with their environment is how the world around us influences our behavior and how we speak and act with one another. We can understand the changes around us by looking at our community and identifying the changes that have occurred over "increments of time, from 2 years to 100 years." Humans have made several changes to the world and not all of them have been positive changes, for example deforestation of the world's forests. Many animals and plants have lost their lives or homes due to humans. Humans have caused air and water pollution, the loss of animals and plant lives, and the thinning of the ozone layer.
