"Christmas" is a shortened form of " Christ's mass". It is derived from the Middle English Cristemasse, which is from Old English Crīstesmæsse. Crīst is from Greek Khrīstos, a translation of Hebrew Māšîaḥ, "Messiah", meaning "anointed"; and mæsse is from Latin missa, the celebration of the Eucharist. In addition to "Christmas", the holiday has been known by various other names throughout its history.

THREE INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT CHRISTMAS

1. OFFICIAL COLOURS: The colours of Christmas are green, red and gold. Green represents rebirth and life, red is referred to the blood of Christ and gold is referred to the light, wealth and royalty.
2. MISTLETOE: If you know what mistletoe is, you will have heard about the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe, but the reality is that this plant is much more than that. For the druids, it was a sacred plant because it remained green during the winter and, according to the belief, this plant cured infertility and protected from evil.
3. MAKING CALCULATIONS: According to Unicef, there are 2106 million children in the world, and thus, if we calculate that there are 2.5 children per house on average, Santa Claus should make 842 million stops during Christmas night. This implies that he should do so in 2/10000 seconds and accelerate 20.5 billion meters per second at each stop. The force of this acceleration would instantly kill Santa Claus.

Western Christianity celebrates the Magi on the day of Epiphany (January 6) the day following the twelve days of Christmas, particularly in Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Paraguay and Uruguay. In these areas, the Three Kings ("los Reyes Magos de Oriente") receive letters from children and so bring them gifts on the night before Epiphany. In Spain, each one of the Magi is supposed to represent one different continent, Europe (Melchior), Asia (Caspar) and Africa (Balthasar). According to the tradition, the Magi come from the Orient on their camels to visit the houses of all the children, much like Sinterklaas and Santa Claus with his reindeer elsewhere, they visit everyone in one night.
