Throughout the novel, Charlie experiences different types of pain that he believes is better kept to himself. An example of this would be when he initiates a relationship with Mary Elizabeth, knowing full well that he had no interest in her. He didn't want to damage her feelings so instead he decided to continue the relationship despite falling in love with another girl. Instead of choosing the appropriate thing to do, Charlie decided to attempt to keep everyone else happy and disregarded his own feelings.

There are many themes that can pertain to the novel, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower". One of these themes describes the value and power friendship truly has. As the story begins, Charlie starts high school alone and desolate over the fact that his best friend passed away. He feels as if he doesnt belong anywhere and would much rather go back to when he had his friend. He soon discovers what it feels like to be part of a group and eventually becomes emotionally stronger because of it. He finds that he is able to do things he hadnt had the confidence to ever do before and makes bold decisions. Friendship drove him to become a better person and changed his life for the better.

At that moment Charlie stated that he felt infinite.
