I think that the death penalty should be kept, but should only be used in extreme or certain cases. The death penalty should be used when the prisoner is a brutal and extreme murderer, and he can understand what he did and why he did it. I also think that the death penalty should be given to people who are determined that they should not live in society or in the prison because they are a danger to society and other prisoners as well. In regard to prisoners with mental problems, If it is possible to rehabilitate them, then the death penalty should not be given. If a prisoner has no control over his actions due to his mental problems and is a danger to society, he should be given the death penalty.

This source has a collection of statements from many government officials and other important people who have a say about the death penalty. The article talks about the main ideas and reasons for the death penalty and against the death penalty such as morality, constitutionality, and the cost. For Example, the article talks about the morality of the death penalty through the statements of Edward Feser and Joseph Bessete, who have are professors of Philosophy and of Government and Ethics respectively. These two professors argue that the death penalty is only for the most brutal and conscienceless murderers and is not based on random selection. They argue that sentencing brutal killers to less than death is a failure of justice.

“Top 10 Pro & Con Arguments - Death Penalty - ProCon.org.” Death Penalty, 18 Feb. 2020, deathpenalty.procon.org/top-10-pro-con-arguments/.
Should the death penalty be banned as a form of punishment?

This source provides both sides of the argument of the death penalty and the effects it has on others. This source goes into great detail the arguments used in both sides of the argument. For example, one of the arguments for the death penalty is that it creates another form of crime deterrent. Crime would run rampant if there weren't some way to deter people from committing the acts. The death penalty is a strong deterrent to stop more crime from happening. Another argument given in the article is that the death penalty gives closure to the victim's families who have suffered because of the prisoner who has harmed them.

Messerli, Joe. Death Penalty (Pros & Cons, Arguments For and Against, Advantages & Disadvantages), www.balancedpolitics.org/death_penalty.htm.
Arguments in favour of capital punishment

This article written by the BBC talks about the ethics of capital punishment. One of the arguments in this article is retribution. This argument is that all guilty people deserve to be punished, and only guilty people deserve to be punished. It also says that guilty people deserve to be punished in proportion to the severity of the crime. This article also provides arguments against ideas of capital punishment. For example, an argument against retribution is that capital punishment is actually vengeance rather than retribution.

“Ethics - Capital Punishment: Arguments in Favour of Capital Punishment.” BBC, BBC, www.bbc.co.uk/ethics/capitalpunishment/for_1.shtml. Accessed 30 May 2021.

After the Debate

After participating in the debate and hearing both sides of the argument, I think that the side that wanted to keep the death penalty won the debate. I think that this side guided the whole debate and had very consistent and strong answers that the other side could not respond to well. On the abolish the death penality side, a lot of the points were very similar and just rephrased. The for the death penalty side was easily able to refute any argument the other side made. I also think the for death penalty side did very well on bouncing points of each other and using each other's points as a way to make the argument a lot stronger.
