Some placement supervisors do not fully understand the competency process, which means they can sometimes hold back signing off things. This puts us in a strange position of having to advocate for ourselves and what the definition of meeting a competency means. It feels that different supervisors have different ideas around what meeting a competency looks like.

There have been several times when I have emailed the lecturers and I have just not had a reply from them. Some of the emails have been around assignments and it has not helped with anxieties. Is there anyway this could be raised?

race and racism groups could cover more areas of difference e.g. disability, gender. This would be interesting and highlight other graces.

I have enjoyed my placement and feel that I am meeting many competencies, but don't feel that the assignments are flexible enough for the type of placement I am on and have worries around being penalised for this on the assignments

There seems to be confusion around dates and information that overlaps placement/uni. There has been different information given out which has been confusing (i.e. if bank holidays count as days taken from placement days)

I didn't attend the CBT session for formative feedback (I was in another model group), but heard that James listed lots of things we need to remember to do if we're not going to fail. Given that we're all doing CBT, can we have this info in an email?

There seems to be a disparity between the support offered by appraisal tutors that does not feel fair. Could there be a minimum time for emails to be responded to? Not having replies for weeks on end does not feel helpful or supportive.

I think there was quite a bit of irony that the last Race and Racism group was timetabled on Eid, as this doesn't feel very inclusive. More thought into timetabling these sorts of sessions would be appreciated.

Guest lecture - content - Does not seem to be governed effectively? Much of the same information shared that we have already been given in teaching with core staff - less time for more helpful concepts

We were given lots of time and support to prepare for our group EBL presentation, but no guidance, instructions or time to prepare for the individual EDI presentation. I'd like to do the presentation well, but that's just not going to be possible given the other assignment (models) we also have to hand in just after.

It would be helpful for placement supervisors to have a talk on expectations of first year with regards to assignments /what’s our competing demands and how to support us during these processes.

Some of the placements are not appropriate for year 1 in terms of the competencies we need to meet and the first CPR (models and assessment). Although there has been support from the uni to move things around, they're aware it is not ideal and have said some placements are more for trainees when at the end of year 2 or in year 3 (but still have allocated us these placements). I hope the appropriateness of some placements for year 1 is considered more in the future for upcoming trainees as it has been a stressful start to the course.

Examples of assignments would be really useful. They wouldn't have to be a top mark example (just a pass) so that we can see what the assignment should look like as it feels really blind even with the feedback sessions. People who have friends in older years have been lucky enough to be sent examples from their own work and this feels unfair to those on the cohort who don't have this option. So an equaliser would be to have a simple example for everyone to see. I know a lot of other course do offer it and it would be very appreciated on this course.

Have felt very lucky with my year 1 placement, it’s been very supportive and I have enjoyed the opportunity to have 2 supervisors with 2 different approaches. I have also been fortunate as it has aligned well with assignments - something I know hasn’t been the same for all of my colleagues

I think it would help to not have the number/score of an assignment be the first thing you see (on canvas), as it biases how we read the feedback. It can also leave us feeling worse even though the object is to pass an assignment.

It seems like the lectures have given up on talking about EDI. It was mentioned a lot in the beginning but it’s hardly mentioned now. When they do talk about it, it seems to be a small slide at the end which mentions the importance of considering the using techniques with diverse populations but with no actual guidance or references. This is highly disappointing as this is the main reason I chose Birmingham.

We need more study days around the assignment. I’d be happier to have lectures even later in the summer if it meant we got enough time to actually do the assignments. When are we supposed to prep for the EDI presentation?? Everybody is having to work on the weekends which is not okay, especially when you have children.
