         <description><![CDATA[<div>Students can apply AND show what they know using a variety of digital tools.  They can create videos or slides, engage with games or quizzes on Kahoot or GimKit, answer questions or polls on Google, and share knowledge using Padlet or Answer Garden - to name just a few. The Hyper Doc app is a great choice with open-ended opportunities for kids to share. These are only just a few of the many, many ways learners can show what they know using tech. Kids love tech, and given the efficiencies and flexibilities it offers, it is a logical choice for application of knowledge.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Digital formative assessments are a fast way to gather formative assessment data. Most of my learners love working on the computer and their motivation to participate is high. Depending on the digital tool, I can gather the assessment data fast and easily in a spreadsheets format. Digital assessments work well in a remote learning scenario. I am, however, worried about my students&#39; lack of fluent typing skills which make digital assessments painful for them. Given my students&#39; age group, it is also important to limit their screen time and I need to have a good variety of non-screen time assessment options.</title>

Google forms are also a fast and easy way to conduct a summative assessment. I have heard of Seesaw as a way of sharing your learning but have not personally used it. It also lets me know if I need to get a few kids in a group to do some additional work and/or if I can give some kids more challenging work to enhance their learning because they &quot;got it&quot; while most of the class needs more time.          <title>I believe it is extremely important that our students be digitally literate.  Using digital formative assessment is a way I can integrate technology into my lessons.  Also, depending on the tool, I can get immediate feedback, for example a graph, of where the kids are.  If designed correctly, that helps me know right away, without correcting papers, if I should move on.  It is a little more anonymous than holding up a white board and there is less chance that a kid who doesn&#39;t understand can look at someone else&#39;s answer and skate under the radar.</title>

         <title>Summative assessment lets you see the information that has stuck.  Many times I have had kids do fine on formative assessments at the time of teaching but 2-4 weeks later they cannot apply that learning.  This impacts my teaching by letting me know if I need to go back and cover certain parts of a unit.  If the whole class (or a lot of the class) does not get certain parts correct, it tells me that I need to explore other ways to teach the material - that the way I taught it the first time was not clear or effective.</title>

         <title>Summative assessment, while not entirely without purpose, can become the &quot;brass ring&quot; achievement that becomes synonymous with success in academia.  In other words, it defines those who test well with those who, for whatever reason, might not perform their best under time constraints of standardized testing.  Summative testing does not allow much for divergent thinkers to express themselves, as much as the yes/no answers of linear thinking.  Therefore, formative testing is clearly needed.</title>

This can range anywhere from a simple thumbs up/thumbs down check-in, to sitting down with a student and going over their work with them. Any interaction that lets you know how a student is doing is a kind of formative assessment, which can be used to figure out what to do next with a student, group, or whole class.</div>]]></description>

If the unit is over and I find that many students struggled with a concept, then I can revisit that concept by tucking it into a later unit. (Most of our curricula spiral back, so this isn&#39;t as tricky as it may sound.) I can also make notes for next year&#39;s teaching so that I can improve for my next class.</title>
