Theme

The theme of this vignette is family and insecurity. Esperanza has a lot of insecurities including her name, hair, and now her shoes in this particular vignette. Cisneros conveys this theme through tone and similes. Even though Esperanza was unsure about her chanclas, her uncle helped her get over her insecurities and helped her have fun at the party. With the help of her family, Esperanza became more confident and started to finally have fun and let loose at the party and get over the fact that she is wearing her old chanclas.

Esperanza’s mom buys new clothes to wear to her cousins party. She buys everything except new shoes. So when they end up going to the party Esperanza is embarrassed to dance because she does not want anyone to see her old stuffed up shoes. Esperanza doesn’t feel confident even with her new dress because she hates her ugly old shoes so it makes her feel bad at the part. But after awhile her uncle makes her dance and Esperanza is having so much fun dancing, she forgets about her ugly shoes.

Significance

This quote is significant because it shows how Esperanza’s family helps her get over her insecurities. Esperanza doesn’t like her ugly shoes and is so caught up in her shoes that she isn’t having any fun at her cousin’s baptism party. But then her uncle helps her forget about her ugly shoes and helps her just let loose and have fun. This shows that Esperanza can let her insecurities get the best of her and ruin what she thought was going to be a fun party. Cisneros also establishes a theme, which is mentioned to the left in this vignette.

Stylistic Devices

In this quote there is a simile, “....everyone says, wow, who are those two who dance like in the movies….” This simile is significant because it is showing that Esperanza is having so much fun she feels like she is in a movie. She is saying that Esperanza and her Uncle Nacho dancing together is like a scene straight out of a movie. Cisneros also uses a certain tone when Esperanza is talking about her chanclas. Esperanza is really sad and irritated that she didn't get new shoes. But when she starts to have fun and her uncle dances with her, Cisneros uses a more positive and happy tone. These stylistic devices, all help to reveal the theme that is mentioned to the right.

This quote can be related to past vignettes, like “My Name” and “Hairs” because they are both talking about what Esperanza is insecure about. They both also talk about how Esperanza does not like the things that she has and wants to change those things.
