Timber is wood prepared for use in building and carpentry and it is a renewable resource. Being a renewable resource means that it can be used repeatedly and does not run out because it is naturally replaced. This group includes forests, wildlife, groundwater and fish. Most of the timber in the Amazon rainforest is known as mahogany. Mahogany is high value timber found in South America and Africa.

The value of the timber industry reached a value of nearly $535.96 billion in 2020, having increased at a compound annual growth rate of 0.8% since 2015. The market is expected to grow from $535.96 billion in 2020 to $726.51 billion in 2025 at a rate of 6.3%.

The economic value of timber on a global scale varies depending on the quality of the wood however it provides extensive amounts of jobs as well as an increase in countries national income. Timber refers to the wood after being collected from labouring, therefore people are needed to turn this natural material into a useful resource. Within Australia alone from 2018 to 2019, the timber industry created $23.9 billion of sales and service income as well as provided 52,000 people with jobs. In the Amazon the timber industry provided 204,000 people with jobs which included 66,000 in direct jobs and 137,000 in indirect jobs.

In the Amazon, timber is accessed by the logging of trees, which is often very destructive affecting surrounding wildlife and ecosystems by culling their homes. The large trees are cut down using heavy instruments, and dragged through the rainforest. The timber is accessed by those who own the area of trees, however the Areas that have been selectively logged are much more likely to be accessed and cleared by other cultivators than because of the road access created. After the wood has been sawed and dred, the timber is stored and dried, the timber is loaded on to shipments and sent to international markets and countries. Illegal logging accounts for 8-10% of timber production.

Global

The resource is commonly used globally in everyday life. In a study conducted in 2019, it was found that China was the biggest wood importer, with US $40 million worth of wood imported, second was the United States US $ 38 million and in third was Germany with 35 Million dollars worth of timber. Industrialised countries are beginning to use timber for energy. These countries include, USA, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Canada and Austria. On the other side of the spectrum, third world countries also use timber such as India. In India timber is used for many reasons such as construction for poles, piles, furniture.

National

Timber is used in higher amounts within Brazil's more densely populated areas such as Rio de Jairo, São Paulo and Salvador. The reason for the high use of timber in these more urban areas is due to the higher population which equates to a higher demand in the natural resource of timber for its versatile uses.

Local

Majority of logging that occurs within the Amazon is exported overseas to countries such as the USA, China and Germany to use in a variety of big production lines. However, in 2018 research found that an estimated 6.7% of the timber harvested within the Amazon was being used by locals for purposes such as architecture and wood fires.
