It is possible to live a healthy and happy life with hyperacusis however most do find it a struggle. Their quality of life is compromised because of how difficult it can be to communicate with others and be in an environment with today's noise. The majority of individuals with hyperacusis tend to isolate themselves because of their fear of normal sounds. Simple sounds such as jingling coins, barking dogs, traffic, chewing, etc. can cause discomfort and be painful for these individuals.

misophonia elicits a stronger emotional response, which may be negative towards a more specific sound. For instance, some “misophonia” sounds are sounds like people’s chewing, slurps, taps, and repetitive noises. When exposed to the trigger sounds, people with misophonia typically experience great emotional problems like anger, irritation, anxiety, etc. It is not impossible for people to have both symptoms at the same time, which might make sensory issues already experienced by people with autism even more severe.

Hyperacusis and tinnitus are often associated with each other, and individuals with both conditions may experience a heightened sensitivity to sounds. This makes these individuals environment more challenging to navigate.

Individuals with ASD may be more prone to experiencing hyperacusis. Though about 40% of people with autism have hyperacusis, sensory processing differences, including heightened sensitivity to sound, are common features of autism.

People with PTSD may develop hyperacusis as a result of heightened arousal and increased sensitivity to potential threats, which can extend to an increased sensitivity to sounds.

Hyperacusis can also be a consequence of head injuries or trauma to the auditory system. Damage to the auditory pathways or structures in the brain can lead to altered perception of sound.
