George is a significant figure in sociology because he was the founder of the symbolic interaction theory - a theory that focuses on how individuals create meaning to their society by focusing on symbols present in their lives. 
The symbolic interaction theory is important in sociology because it can be seen as the core theory relating to the function of society. The theory examines how people allot meaning to a social interaction based on their interpretation of the situation. It is thanks to George Herbert Mead for originating this theory. If he hadn't, society could be looked at in a much more complex perspective. 
2. first point: this theory seeks to understand an individual's relationship with their society. 
second point: Society, is a product of an individual's construct of their perspective. 
third point: Everyone may have a different "lens" on society which impacts how they act in situations. 
fourth point: "symbols" are not literal symbols. They are situations that forms an individual's outlook on society. 
fifth point: An interaction/perspective of a social situation does not always equate to the truth.
Sixth point: The way individuals begin to form their perspective of the social world is through communication and interaction.

  • Why is he significant?
    • Durkheim's body of work as a researcher and theorist focused on how it is that a society can form and function. He is significant because with his research, he helped define and establish the field of sociology as an academic discipline and distinguished it from others, making it an entity of its own. He is also widely regarded as the founder of the French school of sociology. 

    2. Durkheim's theory 
    • Durkheim believed that societies need to create a sense of social solidarity, teaching individuals standards of acceptable behavior. 
    • In Durkheim's view, there are two types of social solidarity. These are mechanical and organic solidarity
    • In mechanical solidarity, social cohesion and unity arise from the similarity of individuals, like how people feel connected by the same work or education. 
    • organic solidarity is a state in which members of industrial societies integrate through the interdependence of all individuals
    • Mechanical solidarity occurs in relatively small societies where individuals take on many similar tasks. Meanwhile, organic solidarity develops in societies where people have differentiated tasks.
    • Durkheim suggested that modern industrial societies were consequently characterized by moral confusion, often resulting in crime and deviance.

    - The Order of Things: ways of thinking determine what is truth and what is an acceptable discourse about a subject by delineating the origins of biology, economics, and linguistics.

    - Discipline and punishment:  It is an analysis of the social and theoretical mechanisms behind the changes that occurred in Western penal systems during the modern age based on historical documents from France. 

    - The History of Sexuality: Examines the emergence of "sexuality" as a discursive object and separate sphere of life and argues that the notion that every individual has a sexuality is a relatively recent development in Western societies.
