SUSTENANCE II by Talei Luscia

"SUSTENANCE II" is a padlet based publication activity edited by Katerina Teaiwa, Talei Mangioni and Natalie Harkin for participants of the "To Hell With Drowning" AAPS 2023 biennial conference. We encourage everyone to creatively respond to the prompt with your own images, art, music, song lists and links, text (prose & poetry) and anything else you’d like to share. Please let us know which image you’d like as your bio picture - an actual picture of you, or something else that you choose to go alongside your name or names (if you collaborate with others). These will be compiled for the publication of a chapbook following the conference. The first Sustenance book has been included in your conference bag for reference. For further information, contact Talei.Mangioni@anu.edu.au

Please post your creative reflections on the AAPS2023 conference. The theme "To Hell With Drowning" was inspired by the words of Indigenous Chamorro human rights lawyer Julian Aguon's essay for The Atlantic.

Undertaking a creative practice PhD that includes writing a novel has been hard; oftentimes my creative writing feels forced and the pressure to write strips away all playfulness and pleasure I normally feel when swirling words like colours on the page. Creating art for others has kept me sane and kept my PhD moving.

I created this painting for my beautiful friend, Dr Sam Iti Prendergast, to mark the defence of her PhD at the end of April this year. The upoko whakairo incorporates locally sourced sand and acrylic paint on a wooden panel and is a depiction of our kuia and keeper of mātauranga, Hine-nui-te-pō. Her tears and hupe reflect both joy when we eventually reunite with our kuia, as well as the pain and laughter we experience during our doctoral journeys. I initially reached for hot pink and sparkly paint, but got aunty-slapped quite quickly by ngā tīpuna and ngā atua. When I chose to put my ego aside and listen, I was instead guided towards the beautiful, earthy colours that more aptly reflect the amazing Maniapoto recipient of this piece. Unsurprisingly, communicating with my tīpuna has opened up areas of my creative writing that might have otherwise remained obscure. The lessons of this kōrero: Toi is rongoā! Listen to your tīpuna!
