The GI Genius (GIG) is the first ever polyp-identifying system using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The GIG is compatible with any colonoscope and aids endoscopists in visualizing precancerous polyps by integrating into the visual feed that is maintained during a colonoscopy. Using advanced algorithms, the GIG uses a visual marker when it identifies colon or rectal mucosa consistent with a polyp. Additionally, low-volume sounds are made to indicate tissue that needs further inspection.

(SAGES, 2021)

Opinion & Rationale: Is It Really Genius?

The GIG is a novel innovation and I believe it can be effective in certain situations. However, I do not think it is something that should be used universally, and is most beneficial in specific circumstances. For instance, in situations with less-experienced endoscopists, GIG offers an additional method of polyp identification and can help with highlighting "what polyp mucosa looks like". This targeted exposure can help endoscopists develop the polyp-identification skill. However, some evidence shows that GIG is beneficial to less-experienced endoscopists and provides no noticeable benefit for well-experienced endoscopists. In a study in Japan, it was found that GIG was beneficial to adenoma detection for trainees but not experienced endoscopists (GI & Endoscopy News, 2024). Additionally, if newer endoscopists were to gain continuous experience using GIG, they could become reliant on it. In a situation where GIG was not functioning, a physician might perform a suboptimal exam with one of their key resources missing. Ultimately, I think GIG could be quite beneficial, however, there is a medium to be found between bolstering the endoscopists' efforts, without neglecting the physician's skill development and maintenance.
