An image of Lake Washington featuring a chained fence to prevent people from using the dock and the water. This piece draws a relationship to how the bacteria can be transmitted. In late July 2020, this lake was shut down due to high levels of bacteria in the water. There were animal fecal matter along the walkways and near the water when this photo was taken. Many swimmers, water sport athletes, as well as animals could be at risk of becoming sick if the water had been consumed.

One of the most effective ways in preventing the spread of disease is through hand washing. I took this image to represent how the use of soap and water can be an active method in preventing bacterial disease, especially when it comes to handling uncooked and unwashed foods. The message of hand washing to destroy bacteria is the inspiration behind this piece.

Below is an image of a station that I had found on my walk in my neighborhood. In most cases, there isn’t any hand sanitizer left or wash stations included inside or outside. This increases the risk of infectious diseases that come from handling shared surface areas that may contain bacteria in or on them.

Ryan Gregory from Canada's University of Guelph. He uses a paint brush and paints the bacterium in this fashion onto the agar plates. The result below occurs after an incubation period allows the bacterium to grow colonies on the plate. I chose this particular piece because the Archaeopteryx bird was created using the same strain. It’s also fascinating to see how artistic talent can be used in a scientific lab!

It provides a description of what E. coli 0157:H7 is and the origin of the pathogen. This bacterium is mainly transmitted through the fecal-oral route, when the meat has been contaminated by cattle feces in the process of meat factory preparation. It’s always a good idea for consumers to choose trusted meat sources that ensure food safety prior to purchasing and perhaps eating.

I appreciated the way that the hamburger diagram was deconstructed to show the viewer possible contaminants. Not only is it uncooked meat that could be contaminated, but also improperly washed vegetables too. This information is useful to note when making conscious diet decisions and habits, especially at the grocery store and cooking at home.

E.coli 0157:H7, a food and waterborne pathogen, is an enterohemorrhagic (severe intestinal infection) bacterial strain. This bacteria is transmitted via the fecal-oral route. This happens when a person eats or drinks contaminated water or undercooked food. Although E. coli is typically harmless by itself, this specific strain can cause unfavorable effects. It is usually found in the intestinal tract of humans and animals so humans are not the only host. However, only humans are able to show symptoms if an individual has a bacterial infection. This collection aims to display a visual representation of how this bacteria can interact with a person's health.

Links used:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK507845/
https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/escherichia-coli-o157-h7
