CHRISTMAS IN FINLAND

Loccation: Finland, Europe

Holiday period:

The Christmas season lasts almost all of December until the 26th, but winter with all its charms continues for a few more months. In fact, Christmas is the beginning of a period of snow and winter sports. Anyway, it is one of the best times of the year in Finland

Tradisions:

For Finns, Christmas Eve is the main event of the holidays and the night Santa brings gifts for children. Santa's visit is undoubtedly the most anticipated Finnish Christmas tradition amongst the smallest members of the family. Apart from the delightful number of opening presents, the Christmas Eve traditions typically include drinking glögi, having a Christmas dinner, and bathing in a Christmas sauna. Midnight Christmas mass is a tradition for many.

Everyone knows Santa Claus comes from Finland, but there’s more to a traditional Finnish Christmas than Saint Nick and presents. During the festive season, Finns like to take things slow and enjoy the company of loved ones – with a side of mulled wine and sauna.

White landscapes shrouded in darkness, lit only by stars in the sky and ice lanterns on driveways, set the mood for a cosy festive season. For most, Christmas preparations in Finland start by deciding where to spend it. At home with family is a common choice, but some families rent a cottage or villa in the countryside.

Food also plays a central part in Finland’s Christmas celebrations. Pork roast is the main dish in most households and it’s served with a variety of fish, casseroles and salads. The traditional Christmas Eve breakfast is rice pudding. Later, after a couple Christmas ales, carols are sung with gusto. At the end of the night, a warm Christmas sauna relaxes one’s body and soul.

Christmas food:

The Finnish Christmas food traditions vary around the country, but there are still a few staple dishes intrinsic to this wintery feast. An oven-baked ham served with mustard is an absolute must for many, but an assortment of fish is also considered an essential part of traditional Finnish Christmas dinner. Vegetarian courses include a classic beetroot salad and various oven-baked root dishes like the popular rutabaga casserole.

Curiosities:

Finland is famous for the Northern Lights, and people go there to see these amazing natural events. It is also called "Santa Claus' City" because it is said that Santa Claus lives there, since there are many reindeer and it is all covered with snow.

Famous Place:

Rovaniemi, gateway to Lapland, is the most famous city to see in Finland, especially for children who have the opportunity to meet Santa Claus.

Christmas Day in Japan

New Year is a homely celebration, ideal for gathering all the family members, going to the temple and welcoming the New Year with traditional food and drinks.

Christmas Eve in Japan is considered the most romantic time of the year. It is the Japanese version of Valentine's Day.

Japanese couples, especially younger ones, reserve tables in restaurants, shops sell romantic Christmas gifts and the streets are decorated to celebrate Valentine's Day.

Japanese Christmas cake

It is sold on practically every street, from Hokkaido to Kyushu. This dessert is light and fluffy, with whipped cream and topped with perfectly cut natural strawberries.

This Christmas treat, also very popular at birthday celebrations, has been understood as a symbol of prosperity since World War II.

KFC: the traditional Christmas dinner in Japan

Every Christmas it is estimated that more than 3.6 million Japanese families purchase their festive menu at the American chain Kentucky Fried Chicken. This tradition is sacred and is considered the greatest Christmas representation in the country.

Demand is so high that people start ordering menus six weeks in advance, and the queue on Christmas Day to pick up the order can be hours long. Simply put, Christmas is not complete without a visit to Colonel Sanders.

But why does this happen? We can find the reason by going back in time more than 40 years, when the first KFC manager in the country, Takeshi Okawara, had an idea called “Christmas Bucket”, shortly after the company opened establishments in Japan in 1970.

Christmas lights in Japan

Nobody does it better than the Japanese when it comes to expressing happiness, in an exaggerated way. The entire country goes crazy with Christmas lights. Shopping centers, restaurants, public areas have magnificent sets of lights
