This contradictory behavior is woven throughout the story starting with the exclusion of Hooper once he started wearing the veil on the first sunday despite the commandment of loving their neighbor as themselves. As the story progresses the Puritans do not interact with Hooper in their day to day life but relying on him for sin forgiveness on the deathbed. This quick opinion change furthers their hypocrisy becuase of their wishy washy opinions. The  secret help from Hooper continues the theme of public life not reflecting secret sins.

The confrontation started becuase of rumors being spread in town as a part of others fears.
