According to Tan:
What is the relationship between language and identity?

How does the concept of “standard” or “proper” English affect this relationship?

According to Amy Tan's essay, she says languages are powerful. The language is a fundamental aspect of one's identity, and the language that everyone spoke had its own unique identity and its magic.

Moreover, according to her mom's stories and her own experiences, it show that actually the society has different responds to the standard English and proper English. Like Tan writes, sometimes others might not take her mother seriously because of the limitations of her English.

From Tan’s article, I could feel that she suggests that the language could affect the identity very deeply. For her, as a nonnative English speaker, she feels that her “ broken” English brought her many limitation in life and her identity. Firstly she contends that the limitation on language limit one person thought. But in the end of the passage, I think she realized that the outside language could not be the thing to evaluate people inside language, and the identity could not be just evaluated from language.

For the second question, I think the standard of the English is the language outside, like the way they say English, the words they used, and how people understand. This standard for Tan is not a perfect one, since she suggests that the outside language could not evaluated a person’s identity.

People are classified and defined by different language patterns. Some choose to follow the stereotypes created by the language, and others will use these so-called restrictions to create their own style.
What really changes a person's identity is not the language itself, because whether it's "broken English" or “standard English” can both make sense. Different treatment in this society and his/her attitude towards his/her own language have changed everyone's identity. Mother Tongue is so influenced because each family has a unique way of communicating with others.
"Standard English" seem to give people a outline, a stereotype of what people should they be. Asian American should be working with science instead of Math. Some people follow it, some do not.

Language is your identity but it's not everything. Your "broken" English doesn't tell who you are. The "standard" and "proper" English do not make the relationship worse, it makes Tan realize although her mom's English is not good but she still hers mom and she is amazing.
