I loved this piece also. I highlighted this whole passage and deeply loved their extended metaphor of the "roadmap" or "treasure map". I think anytime a writer (or group of writers) show humility that their work is incomplete is admirable. I actually saw some of these flaws prior to getting to this section, so I felt that much more appreciative that they mention these issues themselves right away. I also looked at much of this as a to-do list. I felt compelled to fill in some of these holes myself. I think there are SO many variables in what we do, that studies/teks/observations will be hard-pressed to ever truly take them all into account. - Jennifer Ellison

I think many teachers (including some English teachers) feel that reading and writing are two separate things and in my opinion, as supported here, they just aren't. It helps students (and us, too) solidify that learning experience into something tangible and in our own language. - Jennifer Ellison

I agree. Too often in our field, I see teachers reusing material just because it is there or because it is what has always been done. That being said, though, I am often the unpopular one who also feels that there is sometimes no need to reinvent the wheel or fix what was never broken in the first place. I think there is a little too much emphasis on needing to do something new just because it is new - these are not best practices either just because they're different from what was done the previous year. I believe in exposing students to both classic and contemporary pieces because I believe both are important and have their place. I think back to the ancient teachings and they were not using smart boards or technology just to check a box - they were just reading, writing, talking, and listening. I think there's a lot of merit in this approach and it is ancient. I think - whatever approach, it needs to be reviewed and reviewed carefully to ensure it is effective and useful for every student in the room - not just one population. - Jennifer Ellison

I just love the humility of this line. It is SO important that we remind ourselves of what we DON'T know so that, if necessary, we figure it out, but as Faith mentioned - ask ourselves if it is necessary to be known in order to achieve our goal. There is a lot of uncertainty and a lot of variables in what we do - we saw that this past year probably more so than ever before. But what is important is taking time to look at what we did or didn't do and move forward from there. Often, we are always on to the next thing and never evaluating what has been done or what IS known. Great line here. - Jennifer Ellison

I find the most difficult challenge in contextualizing writing strategies is when there's a significant turnover in the teaching staff, or when there are multiple teachers at a grade level without much horizontal alignment of skills and practices.

If we approach texts rhetorically, and then teach students to approach their writing tasks rhetorically, they start making that connection. I appreciate what Deb wrote about the "Missing Link" article. Most of what we do in school is prepare students to write academically. I don't think that should change. But, at the same time, it doesn't mean we aren't teaching them how to write for the real world. It is about rhetoric. Learning how to adjust their writing style and content for a college-educated audience is teaching them the core skill they need. We just need to do a better job of teaching them that skill, and allow them to work toward independence.

When we are reading as writers, we are looking at moves the writer made and thinking about why they did that or how we can emulate that within our own writing. I taught A LOT of football players this year so the sports analogies were heavy. I likened it to watching a football game on tv. Sometimes they watch just to enjoy the game. Other times, they watch with a focus of analyzing what the players are doing and talking about the decisions made on the field.

While I agree with the premise of this statement, I do think that there hasn't been an exhaustive amount of research doe on writing/learning strategies that are effective with every cohort of students. 'Traditional' teaching practices don't all have to be thrown out if there isn't a traceable link to research. Critical analysis of the strategies, collaboration in teaching and learning are necessary I think.
