         <description><![CDATA[<p>2.7 BYA, the first cyanobacteria appeared.</p><p><br></p><p>2.5 to 2.2 BYA, some cyanobacteria develop a new type of photosynthesis where they release oxygen, the same kind of photosynthesis we know now. This excess makes the iron in the ocean's 'rust' and sink all down to the floor of the sea. There is a chance this excess of oxygen also caused a mass extinction with microbes, and because of natural selection, today most animals breathe oxygen.</p><p><br></p><p>2.4 to 2.1 BYA, the Huronian ice age begins</p><p><br></p><p>This was the end of the Archean Eon and the start of the Proterozoic Eon.</p>]]></description>
