The most important part of the Lee and Walsh reading that I found is how "culturally sustaining pedagogy that builds on students evolving identities and simultaneously prepares youth to challenge social injustices." Traditionally, students listen to a teacher give a lesson and there isn't very much interaction. By allowing students to be a part of their learning, to build on their identities, and interact with the learning process, students are prepared to challenge social injustices.

With the help culturally sustaining pedagogy teachers can prepare youth the believe in themselves and challenge unjust and traditional idealisms in the classroom.

By having the students interact and build their own view points, presenting them in the class, and allowing them to prepare for the future when they need to challenge other ideals as the world and social justices continue to change.

I like from this chapter how it again emphasizes, how important it is to make connections with the students, especially with ELLs, and also to come to know their cultural background, such as, were they from and to learn about their history and other parts of their cultural countries of origin. When we connect with our students, we can apply this knowledge to draw from it and use it to the students advantage by teaching concepts and vocabulary, where their background knowledge can be utilized. That is why a agree with the Walsh when he said, "In short, in the Internationals, both teachers and students demonstrate... a fluid understanding of culture, and a teaching practice that explicitly engages questions of equity and justice."

I have had a wonderful experience with clinical teaching and building connections with students throughout the year. Additionally, practicing culturally sustaining pedagogy in the classroom with ESL, newcomer, and general education students has helped me prepare for my future classroom with my own students. I have learned that being communicative and open with every student and making them feel safe and comfortable in the classroom is the most important part of being a teacher.

After reading chapter 11 this week, the most important takeaway was the idea of educators authentically integrating students’ cultural backgrounds within the classroom. This takeaway was very important in the chapter because it not only emphasized that it helps establish a positive and welcoming environment for English learners but that it holds importance for the growth of a learner. Its the idea of understanding that acknowledging cultural backgrounds in the classroom can help a student build interconnectedness and expand their knowledge.

With demographic rapidly increasing in the United States, this chapter talks about how our education system inadequately services students with immigration status. CSP aims to build on the identities of a students' culture by using their culture as a tool in the classroom. It also prepares students to face and challenge the social injustices of today's climate. One important takeaway from implementing CSP in the classroom is getting to know your students backgrounds and it is something that I will regularly do and maintain in my future classroom.
