The first scene is the plane, where Brian in headed to Canada to see his dad. This is important because if it was not a small plane with only two people, it is less likely that when the Pilot had a heart attack that the plane would be crashed with no one knowing where it was. 

The Forrest: 
The rest of the novel takes place in the forrest where the plane crashed. It is surrounded by trees and there is an "L" shaped lake.
