The CleanCision is a device that combines a retractor with infection control mechanisms with the aim to prevent surgical site infections. Surgical wound infection is a common, dangerous, and costly complication. CleanCision was designed by surgeons and infection control experts to reduce the rate of surgical wound contamination and better the outcomes for patients. The CleanCision system is made of a waterproof material that protects the surgical wounds by covering them and the surrounding tissues, while providing irrigation and suction along the edge of the wound.

The CleanCision has a porous layer that touches the skin so that irrigation fluid can be delivered in and out, and a protective outer layer that does not let liquids through. The use of CleanCision was initially focused on abdominal surgery and particularly colorectal surgery which has the highest risk of surgical site contamination. Since the invention of this device 61% reduction in surgical site infections and 66% in reduction of contamination have been reported (medgadget, 2017).

The device is placed into the wound and pulled apart in an intuitive fashion, opening like a flower. The expanding wheel-like device opens and holds the wound retracted for easy access and prevent hands or instruments from touching the incision. The irrigation liquid of choice by the clinical staff is pumped through the CleanCision system to help wash the bacteria that may be present on the wound, therefore preventing infections.

Surgical sites infections (SSIs) remains one the most prevalent and serious problem associated with colorectal surgery due to bacterial contamination at the surgical sites (Papaconstantinou et al. (2018). Advanced Tissue (2016) documented that SSIs infect up to 300,000 people per year and this places a large financial burden on the health care system. These can result in patients delay recovery, prolong hospital stay and increase cost.
