In this article, Douglas White reports on a call made to the police about a foul smell coming from a 10 acre property in Kentucky. After investigating further, police discovered around 400 animals living in horrible conditions. The animals were packed in pins surrounded by layers of feces and dead carcasses of other animals. While there was no explanation as to why the owners of this property let this happen, the Humane Society have removed all of the animals from the property for evaluation and care. The investigation is still going on and it was suggested that charges will be made to the homeowners.

My heart hurt reading this article because I am passionate about animals and I believe they have every right humans do. Animals are smarter than a lot of people think. They feel many different emotions and express them in their own way. It was interesting to find an article that touched on exactly why we should consider animal rights. The homeowners of this property must of had an anthropocentric view while caring for these animals. From the sign shown on the cover of this article, it seems as if they were trying to breed and sell these animals for their own benefit. In any case, they should not have gone to this extent. Referring back to the reading in chapter 17, Peter Singer perfectly defends animal rights by suggesting that because animals are sentient beings, their interests should be given equal considerations as humans do. I agree with this 100%. I wonder how those owners would feel if they had to live in a small pin with 50 other humans, surrounded by feces and dead people. It is absolutely horrifying. If these owners really wanted to benefit themselves, they shouldn't have caused those animals great deal of pain. They are going to get the same right back to them.

White, D.
