De La Warr and his successors used harsh discipline techniques to force workers to accomplish their tasks. Despite this, many workers evaded their duties and were punished. Governer Thomas Dale realized that the colony would run more smoothly if their were incentives to work, so he started to permit the ownership of private land. This early pattern of governance caused the people of the Virginia colony to develop a unique political system and culture, which resulted in expansion and success despite the harsh conditions and laws its people were subjected to.

maryland was extremely different from Virginia when it was established. Its founder, George Calvert, declared himself, in effect, King of Maryland and only acknowledged the British crowns sovereignty through its annual fee. the people of Maryland also avoided conflict with indians and plagues. this led to the development of a far different culture than that of Virginia. In an effort to encourage immigration from England, Calvert introduced a policy of religious tolerance so that more people in Europe would feel welcome. despite their many differences, Virginia and Maryland grew and expanded in very similar ways.

the immigrants who settled the northeast came under very unique circumstances. they were assured that they would be somewhat free of the kings rule, and the Puritans quickly set off aboard the mayflower to build their colony. this colony was based on religious principles and it brought more than just people. like early Spanish and Portuguese colonies, the puritans brought european disease that wiped much of the remaining native population, freeing the puritans up for dominance in hunting and agriculture. much of their agricultural product was exported to england, forming the basis of their economy

much of New Jersey's early population came from new york, so naturally it was different from the other colonies in that it was extremely diverse in numerous ways, especially ethnicity and religion. almost all residents were farmers, and there were no major cities. because of this, its development was unique. it lacked the clear signs of progress that many of the other colonies possessed, but despite its unique style it flourished under a culture of freedom and tolerance.

Georgia was unlike all the other colonies in that the motives for its creation were mostly driven by the desire for military strength. it was less focused on economic strength. the development of a necessary zone of military strength provided a wall of sorts between the English colonies and the spanish colonies in florida. Because of its unique purpose, it developed a strict militaristic culture which prevented it from flourishing and becoming an economic center.

each of these described colonies were very different from one another. they all had different sets of beliefs and cultures, and while some shared certain similarities, sotheir lack of a central governing body was probably beneficial to their success. at this time in their development, the colonies would not have been able to function as one body because they would have struggled to agree on many of their basic principles, beliefs, and cultures. for example, representatives of Georgia would probably enter into a power struggles with representatives of New Jersey because neither would accept the others culture. because of this, the Crowns governance was an advantage in the early years because it allowed the colonies to function in the way that would be most advantageous to them.
