Lincoln had lost support from the Republican party over the years and was highly criticized for caring so much about slavery and inflation. McClellan won 45% of the popular vote and Lincoln had 212 electoral votes. (Lincoln won the election).

Lincoln had decided to go out to see a play with his wife so they were in the balcony seats watching the play and their body guard had went to the bathroom quickly. Little did Lincoln know that his assassin had been an actor in one of the plays at the theater and was going to kill Lincoln. The assassin who's name was John Wilkes Booth had walked through the door up where the balcony seats were and shot Lincoln in the back of his head. He then jumped down from the balcony, landing on the stage, breaking his keg in the process and making a run for it. The body guard came back from the bathroom to see that Lincoln had a bullet in the back of his head and was still alive ,but needed immediate medical help. The doctor came shortly and stuck his finger in to the hole where the bullet was in Lincoln's head and tried getting it out, but it just caused Lincoln's eyes to flutter. The doctor couldn't remove the bullet from Lincoln's head so Lincoln ended up dying of the lack of medical knowledge.

The Union victory in the Civil War in 1865 may have given millions of slaves freedom, but rebuilding the South after the Civil War caused significant problems. Since the North had cut off the South's access to supplies during the Civil War the South was left poor and without money. During 1867 newly franchised African Americans got a say in the government and won elections to Southern legislatures and even U.S Congress. Hoever in less than a decade an organized group of Christian white men started the Klu Klux Klan (KKK) which rose white supremacy again.
