Construction began on the house around 1723 and it reached its final form in 1790. The house exhibits both Spanish and British colonial architectural details and styles. The González–Alvarez House, also known as The Oldest House, is a historic house museum at 14 St. Francis Street in St. Augustine, Florida. It was originally built in the traditional Spanish colonial style and was made with thick coquina walls. This is the same material that was used to construct Castillo de San Marcos. Coquina is a quintessential St. Augustine material, harvested from what is now Anastasia State Park.</strong></div><div><strong>After the British took over Florida in 1763, the home was purchased by an Englishman who added the second story. Supply and subsidence problems and the Civil War delayed construction, making it unfinished.<br>Where is the landmark located and description?:<br>Key West, FL 33040; Fort Jefferson is a massive but unfinished coastal fortress. It is the largest brick masonry structure in the Americas, and is composed of over 16 million bricks. The building covers 16 acres (6.5 ha). Among United States forts, only Fort Monroe in Virginia and Fort Adams in Rhode Island are larger.<br>When was it built and who built it?:<br>1846 and 1875; 2nd Lt. By fortifying this spacious harbor, the United States maintained an important “advance post” for ships patrolling the Gulf of Mexico and the Straits of Florida.<br><br>Why is it important to preserve historical landmarks?:<br>Historic preservation helps keep communities beautiful, vibrant, and livable, and gives people a stake in their surroundings. It connects people with their past, and with one another.<br>Five additional interesting facts:<br><br>On January 4, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated the fort as Fort Jefferson National Monument, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. In October of 1992, Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortuga's were established as a National Park.<br><br>The fort’s most famous, or perhaps infamous, resident was Dr. Samuel Mudd, who was convicted as part of the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln.<br><br>It wasn’t long before criminals of the Union army were brought there, sentenced to what became known as Devil’s Island. <br><br>Being sent to Fort Jefferson was considered to be a fate worse than death.<br>During the Civil War, the federal government decided to use Fort Jefferson as a prison even though the fort was still in construction<br></strong><br></div>]]></description>

The State of Texas deeded the land that it had acquired to the federal government, and on June 12, 1944, Big Bend National Park became a reality. The park opened to visitors on July 1, 1944.<br><strong>Where is the landmark located and description?:<br></strong>Big Bend National Park, TX; Big Bend was established as a national park in June of 1935, preserving the largest tracts of Chihuahuan Desert topography and ecology in the United States. The park comprises 1,252 square miles of land, making it larger than the state of Rhode Island.<br><strong>When was it built and who built it?:</strong><br>June 12, 1944; President Franklin D. Roosevelt<br><strong>Why was it constructed and how much did it cost?:</strong><br>It is unclear but the entrance fees to the park are $30 per vehicle or $25 per motorcycle. The camp closed in March 1942, signalling the end of an era in Big Bend. The building was used for commercial purposes until 1834 when it became a courthouse. In 1911, it became part of the Louisiana State Museum.<br><strong>Where is the landmark located and description?:</strong></div><div>751 Chartres St, New Orleans, LA 70116; The Presbytère is located on the northeast side of Jackson Square, between the cathedral and St. Ann Street. It is a two-story brick building, originally built with a flat roof that had a balustrade topped by urns. It connects people with their past, and with one another.<strong><br>Five additional interesting facts:</strong></div><div>Throughout the 1800s the Presbytere was used for commercial purposes and served as a courthouse from 1834 to 1911. </div><div><br>In 1847 the structure's mansard roof was added, along with a cupola that was blown off in a 1913 hurricane.</div><div><br>The cupola was replaced in 2006, meticulously modeled after the old one.</div><div><br>The exhibit traces the celebration from its ancient origins to the 19th century emergence of New Orleans' parades and balls to the present-day celebration that <br>attracts millions of visitors each year.<br><br>Flanking the opposite side of St. Louis Cathedral from the Cabildo and fronting on Jackson Square, the Presbytere has a colorful history of its own.<br><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Name of Landmark and history behind it:</strong></div><div>El Centro espanol de Tampa; El Centro Español de Tampa is a historic building in the Ybor City neighborhood of Tampa, in the U.S. state of Florida. Built as an ethnic and cultural clubhouse in 1912, the red brick structure situated at 1526–1536 East 7th Avenue is today part of a shopping and entertainment complex.<br><strong>Where is the landmark located and description?:</strong></div><div>3208 N Armenia Ave, Tampa, FL 33607; French Renaissance Revival style in the building, with heavy influence from Moorish Revival and Spanish Mediterranean Revival styles. The structure features masonry construction of red brick with white stone accents. The shape is a basic rectangle, exposed on all but the west side, consisting of a two and a half story-tall main block, with an attached rear wing of three and a half stories. The building's south facade along 7th Avenue features an arched main entrance in Moorish style with cast-iron trim. The club provided a place for camaraderie and family.<strong><br>Why is it important to preserve historical landmarks?:</strong></div><div>Historic preservation helps keep communities beautiful, vibrant, and livable, and gives people a stake in their surroundings. It connects people with their past, and with one another.<strong><br>Five additional interesting facts:</strong></div><div><strong><br></strong>It is one of the few surviving structures specific to Spanish immigration to the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.<br><br></div><div> El Centro Español de Tampa is one of two individual structures within Hillsborough County to be so designated.</div><div><br>As early as 1974, the building was included by the National Register of Historic Places as one of the Contributing Properties within the Ybor City Historic District. </div><div><br>The building remains an important component of the district.</div><div><br>It is now home to Jason Fernandez's restaurant Carne.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>
