I attempted to photograph and crop the image evenly, but some of the edges might have gotten cut off.

I was surprisingly nervous about this assignment - I don't have much experience with freehand drawing. I think that it is because I am left-handed and it was difficult when I was younger. Still, I'm trying to push myself with new methods. I did want to experiment with more geometrical lines than the figural images in the student examples as a start and kept trying different things. I tried a lot of cross-hatching as the use of that for shading was new to me. I'd seen it many times in computer graphics but not as much freehand.

I actually enjoyed the brush exercises quite a bit. I do enjoy the style of liked chinese/japanese brush and calligraphy drawings so that is motivation to keep practicing. I did try both the wet and dry brush work methods. One method from the videos that I really enjoyed practicing was painting the paper with water and then dipping some ink into the still-wet part and seeing the ink diffuse to fill in the image. With this method it was interesting to work "blind" and then see the image appear.

I will certainly need to wait longer for the ink to dry, as it was a bit frustrating to notice the smudges after I moved the paper to take a photograph.

I learned quite a bit from the layering exercise, as getting different shades required a different method in each medium. I was most used to the pencil method. Using Ink, I tried the first method (no cross-hatching) in two different ways. The method that I found worked best was to repeatedly work throughout each of the 8 shaded squared, and each time start one square further left. So the first time I would go through 8 squares, the second time 7, the third time 6 squares, and so on. This allowed me to control gradually darkening the squares.

Paint was fairly challenging for me. I found it interesting to mix the white and black paint to try and produce different shades and to go over previously-painted squares again to adjust the darkness or lightness of the square. When I repeat the exercise, I'll probably test the palette in the paper plate I used to mix the paints. I would try mixing several still-wet dollops of paint to get a ange of greys before transferring them to the paper.

This was an interesting exercise that taught me how much can be done with shades of grey. One surprising challenge was estimating how much of a certain value of paint I would need when blending and then trying to match it if I needed more. I also did have a bit of difficulty not seeing the whole image even if I rotated the painting, and I painted most of this with the canvas sideways. Having one of the cut-out cardboard sheets like in the videos might have been helpful. However, I found that I generally wanted to complete all of the sections with one value ata time, and then move to gradually lighter sections as I went on.

This assignment was a very educational practice.

I was inspired by this idea to find a color scheme in my local grocery store based just on the colors of fruits and vegetables. I chose green as the base color, as that would give me the most variety with this natural palette.
