Tree

The tree in the book is a symbol because it represents how she was feeling depressed and the book said that the tree is what she drew in the beginning of the school year, and it represents her growing throughout the story. Mr. Freeman told her in the beginning that he sees a bad tree that was not detailed at all. But as the story goes on, it gets better and better. It is to show her growth, and the tree should be getting more and more detailed. Malinda and Mr. Freeman said ¨Tree.¨ Tree? It´s too easy. I learned how to draw a tree in second grade. Mr. Freeman shakes his head. ¨Ah-ah-ah,¨ he says.¨ This shows how he wants Malinda to have a good looking detailed tree that has showed growth, not some basic 2nd grader tree.

Melinda says ¨I can not stop biting my lips, it looks like my mouth belongs to someone else, someone I do not even know.¨ Her lips represent her secret and when she bites her lips, that is basically her holding in her secret. This is basically how she hides her secret and she does not want to tell anybody so that is basically how she holds it in. She says she can not stop biting her lips which means she can not tell her secret, but when she says it hurts and it bleeds this is how it is getting harder and harder to hold the secret.

Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou is a symbol because she can relate to her because they were both sexually assaulted, and that is her role model and she really looks up to her. ¨The first thing to go is the mirror. It is screwed to the wall, so I cover it with a poster of Maya Angelou that the librarian gave me.¨ This shows how she hung the poster of her on the closet, but if you find out who Maya Angelou is, you realize what she has done and what has happened to her. She has something major in common to Malinda, which is why Malinda looks up to her.

Mr.Freeman

Mr. Freeman said ¨When people do not express themselves, they die one piece at a time. You would be shocked at how many adults are really dead inside -- walking through their days with no idea who they are, just waiting for a heart attack or cancer or a Mack trust to come along and finish the job. It is the saddest thing I know.¨ This is symbolism to basically Malinda because it shows how Melinda needs to express herself more often or she will forever feel the way she does and depressed. She needs to stop being so insecure and let out her secret or else she will ended up very depressed. Mr. Freeman kind of represents a way to help Malinda express herself and come out with her secret, because Mr. Freeman does not like how Malinda does not talk at all, and throughout the story he tries to open her up more.

The mirror represents Malinda because it shows how shes hurt and venerable inside, and she decorates it with how she feels, but it is mostly her hate towards herself when she looks at herself in the mirror. She also put Maya Angelou posters on it because of a flashback she had that relates to Maya Angelou. Malinda said ¨Two muddy-circle eyes under black-dash eyebrows, piggy-nose nostrils and a chewed-up, horror of a mouth.¨ This shows what she sees when she looks in the mirror. She has no confidence and thinks she is ugly and that is what she sees when she looks in the mirror.

The closet would represent where Malinda hides her rape because whenever Malinda is feeling depressed she goes in the closet and relaxes there. ¨My closet is my place, a quiet place that helps me think about deep thoughts inside my head were no one else can hear them.¨ This explains how her closet is the place where she can get some peace and quiet and she can be in her own zone. She is always hiding in there, and it represents her hiding her rape because she is always in there whenever she can find time.

The frog represents Malinda because it triggered a flashback that she had. She didn't know how to tell people that she got raped and it makes her feel vulnerable. ¨She does not say a word. She is already dead. A scream starts in my gut-I can feel the cut, smell the dirt, leaves my hair.¨ This is the memory from when she got raped, and the frog basically triggered that memory by the way it was strapped down and dissected. She passed out, and she was sent to the hospital because of this.
