The story is about the transition from childhood to adulthood. When Jerry is with his mother at the beginning of the story, he is scared and believes the rocks are dangerous, but as the story continues, and he does more dangerous stuff, like swimming through the tunnel, which shows us in many ways that he is transitioning to adulthood mentally and physically.
