. Artie visits his father regularly to hear more of his stories. He arrives one day to find Vladek counting pills. Artie shifts the conversation to his mother. He wants to know whether Anja had boyfriends before Vladek. She had a male friend from Warsaw who she would rush to see. The man, Vladek learned, was a Communist who had Anja translate messages into German for him. Vladek, who was careful to stay away from Communists, only discovered this after a seamstress living in their apartment building, Miss Stefanska, was arrested for possession of Communist. The police was looking for Anja, which caused the couple to flee to a different town once she promised to stop dabbling in communist affairs. Valdek opens a textile factory, causing him to move to a different town leaving a pregnant Anja to live with her family. Anja has the baby, but undergoes postpartum depression causing her to have to go to a sanitarium with her husband. Anja gets better, but on the train home the couple notices a flag flying with a swastika on it which sparks questions and fear amongst the couple and the passengers on the train. Anja father tells Valdek that their shop has been broken into causing him to be upset, but they have to also deal with the violence and discrimination present in their town causing them to flee to another town. Valdek gets drafted into the military.

Artie is still visiting Vladek often, trying to collect as much information as possible about Vladek’s past. Artie is eating dinner with his father, and his current wife. Artie tells Mala about the extreme lengths to which Vladek went, during Artie’s childhood, to guarantee that Artie never wasted food. He always forced Artie to eat everything. Vladek explains that his father had tried to keep him and his brothers out of the army, starving them and depriving them of sleep for months before the medical examination to make it look as though they were too unhealthy for military service. Valdek failed the first examination and was told to return in a year, but once it was time for another examination he begged his father to let him fight in the war which he did. Vladek tells him about fighting in the trenches near the German border, and how he was forced to kill a enemy who was coming across the river. Valdek was soon overcome and discovered, causing him to be taken as a prisoner of war with a few other comrades. Valdek is transported to a prisoner of war camp with harsh conditions for jews, but he convinces his comrades to sign up for labor assignments with him. Valdek talks about how the work was brutal but the living conditions were better, he tells Artie about his dream that he would be free and how it came true. He speaks about his journey on his way home to his family, and the events that took place during that period.

The animals portraying the Germans as cats, the poles as pigs, and the Jews as mice. The characteristics that associate with these animals have good and negative traits. The cats are seen as sneaky and conniving, the pigs can be seen as harmless but can also be seen as filthy. The mice are seen as weak. I agree with the way Spiegelman used these variations of animals because, they fit the entire human to animal theme while also comparing to the story and the character traits.

Valdek is a Polish Jew and Holocaust survivor. Valdek was seen as a "nice and handsome boy." (Spiegelman 13), during his younger days. Valdek was always approached by various women because of his looks. He had a mature and ambitious aspect to him when he was younger because, he said "I had to quit school at about 14 to work." (Spiegelman 16). Vladek possesses a shrewd intellect and terrific interpersonal skills, which help him navigate perilous situations throughout the war. The older he got he became neurotic, stubborn, and miserable.

The thing that changes my perspective of him that happens in chapter 2 is that his wife becomes depressed and suicidal, so he takes off work and goes with her to a sanitarium to help her get back to her normal mindset. His actions during this time shows his tremendous compassion he has for his wife, not only physically but emotionally and mentally as well.
