He studied modern languages in Europe for three years after graduating from Bowdoin College and then returned to Bowdoin to teach those languages. In 1831, Mr. Longfellow married a former classmate and published his first book, Outer Mer ("Overseas"). His wife sadly passed away four years later, so he spent a year in Switzerland and Germany. Mr. Longfellow published his first collection of poems three years later, followed by "Ballads and Other Poems" in 1841. He married another woman, which gave him new-founded confidence. Because of this, he published a book-length poem titled "Evangeline" in 1847 and quit his teaching profession to pursue poetry seven years later. From 1866 to 1880, he published seven more books of poetry. He yearns to be carried away by his lover's voice, without having to work more by deciphering the poem or listening to a proud poet trying to prove himself or herself. He wants serenity, humility, and to be able to unwind while tuning in to the music of life.
